Don't use manifold heat shielding

A while back I joined a thread discussing the pros and cons of wrap-around type heat shielding for manifolds. My heat shielding was on the car when I bought it. When I checked it 18 months ago there was no rusting of the manifolds. So I was kind of in the pro camp.

Well, both manifolds in the last 18 months have since rotted badly beneath the wrapping and I've just blown a massive 1 1/2 inch hole in one of them.

Don't use wrapping on your manifolds, it will rust them eventually.

Incidently, I'm now looking for two second hand manifolds (can't afford new stainless ones) so if anyone has any for sale please let me know. Its for a 1992 4 litre pre-cat, the ones that bolt on to the 'Y' piece. I don't need the Y piece itself. If anyone is considering upgrading to stainless, maybe I could subsidise the cost by buying your old ones?

Hi,

I have kept my old pair of manifolds (and Y piece) following an upgrade. However I changed them as they had some cracks in near the engine mounting points. No holes like you're talking about however! If you're interested I can take some pictures and e-mail them to you - wouldn't expect more than 50 quid say. I live in Loughborough if you would be thinking of collecting.

Still undecided Gary, thats why I wanted second hand manifolds - I wouldn't recoup the money on stainless ones if I sell it this Summer. But now I'm not sure, I may just keep it.

Jamie, drop [e-mail] a line. He's broken a few Griffs - at least one 4.0 and may have manifolds. It's a way to travel (Stoke on Trent) but I'm sure he'd do a good deal on fitting too.
