We've had the debate on engine oil, how about some discussion on transmissions.

I recently replaced the output shaft seal on my GKN diff and asked the GKN service centre manager which oil they use for these diffs. He recommended Shell Spirax Super 90. This oil is also used by Jaguar and Aston Martin in their LSD's which were also originally manufactured by GKN. TVR as usual recommend a Mobil oil and I have to say I followed the recommendation of GKN (The manufacturer) rather than TVR.

In a similar vein I'm also interested in what Borg Warner might recommend for the T5. Ford used this box in the Sierra Cosworth and recommend their own ATF (Unsurprisingly). Knowing how close a relationship Ford and Borg Warner have I'd be tempted to use their recommendation. However what I'd really like to know is what brand and specification Borg Warner recommend. Answers on a postcard please.........

Regarding the Ford question, I suppose one would have to know who supplied the oil to Ford, to find out what actually went into the T5 as I'm assuming Ford don't actually produce their own mineral oils

In the states its made by a company called Quaker State who are a small refinery.

Not sure if this is the same in Europe though...

Ford use a variety of sources for their oil which usually cover the big players, Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP etc.

Just thought it was an interesting angle as TVR do not run the kind of durability testing which the major car manufacturers do. That's not a criticism but just an observation.

I was in Canada before christmas and as a tvr owner i was looking at the oils available ready to fly some back home with me, i came across Quaker oil mostly 0-30w 's, at $2.00 a litre equivalent to 86p a litre here , why are we always ripped off in Blighty ?
