Martin, this and all the macro stuff you do is fantastic, but how on earth do you get your insects to stay still long enough, do you drug them !!! As soon as I get within a few feet of any insect, butterfly etc they hop/fly off - very annoying, so a I get a blured shot or a perfect shot of a leaf at the best nothing anywhere as clear and detailed as yours. Oh on second thoughts perhaps I'm missing the point and you're actually an expert taxidermist, and just out of view is a huge nail

My sentiments exactly

Flash (Canon 580 EX) set at 2/3 over.
Martin, three questions for you-
1) flash aimed straight or angled?
2) 'pure' flash or any form of diffuser
3) is the exposure compensation something you've found to be required specifically for macro with the flash or just in general?

1) Angled down
2) The 580EX has a built-in diffuser screen that was in place.
3) Specifically for macro with the extention tubes.
HTH, Martin.
