Uk vs the continent for roads...
Discussion
Okay - got back last night from a great week in Cyprus, spent around the Paphos area and trips up to the mountains etc.
Two things that mark out the Cypriot (Greek Cypriot) approach to roads and driving:
1) Only pull out of junctions if you're going to cause a near death experience to anyone already travelling on the road you're joining
2) Roads never need to be fully complete, e.g. it isn't uncommon to find only half the road built (i.e. one side) or even suffenly the tarmac to stop and you're driving on a gravel track, only for it to unexplainedly start again.
Despite this , we never once got stuck in any notable traffic, and actually, the drving there is not actually as bad as the muppets in the UK...
Came back last night, from Gatwick to Bishop's Stortford - 9 sets of roadworks we went past on the M23/25, only a quarter of these had any signs of minimal activity.
Get to M11 turn off ' slip road closed Northbound' - flashing signs - so thought best option, go South, turn round on North Circular.
Do this and bingo - M11 actually totally closed at M25 Junc, couln't the sign have said that? And why the mass roadworks if they're only able to crew up for doing one or two?
We took an extra, already tired hour coming home, and I'm left scratching my head that in our glorious beareaucracy, I am paying through the behind for fuel, for my road tax etc, and still everything is either falling apart or not working properly. Why can't someone program these millions of poundsworth of flashing signs properly?
Anyway, blood pressure too high now, Rant over!!

Whenever I drive off the shuttle at Dover I can't believe how poor the first few miles of Old Blighty are, road-wise. It must give a really bad impression to our Euro chums when they first arrive, and it always fills me with despair, especially Monday evening coming back from Le Mans.

Yeah, funny how the motorways are all dug up for miles on end at the moment. Have you noticed all those purple ducting pipes sticking up out of the verges? The fu**ers are quietly building the infrastructure for road pricing (together with speed monitoring)
They are hiding behind a "driver information system" project. Thought we had already paid for the roads via tax, and now we are expected to pay all over again! Thats my thoughts!

We spent a couple of hours this evening in shite traffic around Austin, Texas......but the rest of Texas is a joy to drive around especially the West side of the state, some of the driving is fantastic, beautiful scenic views and lovely weather although last night we had a Tornado warning where we were staying and the threat of hail the size of grapefruits
luckily it didn't materialise where we were although there was a fantastic electrical storm.
