Rear roof - replace or repair?
Discussion
I was looking at having my rear screen replaced and had quotes around £200. However, for around £75 more I can get a complete new rear section, but I would have to fit it myself.
I have read in a few posts that replacing it is "easy" but my copy of Steve's "Bible" does not have any details.
Has anyone actually removed the rear roof? Was it easy? How long did it take?
Or should I just get the screen replaced (the rest isn't too bad).
Thanks.

I've removed the whole of the rear roof section from the car, which is pretty simple. There are about 7 (if memory serves) bolts to undo from inside the boot and two self tapping screws inside the car near the hinge bolts which will also need to be removed and the rear roof should come off. I wouldn`t want to tackle taking the material off though.
Is it just the plastic screen that needs replacing?? I`m sure I was once told about a place is Huddersfield that could replace it for what seemed to me to be VERY reasonable though I can`t remember what the price was now!

I'm just looking at having some work done on my rear screen. The screen is fine but the sticthing is coming undone. I have just had a quote of £135 of which 4 hours is removing and refitting the roof and then half an hour to stitch all around the window again. The guy did warn me that the material may tear slightly when removing it from the top frame.
I'm off to get two more quotes next week so I'll let you know what they are too.
The guy I went to was AJ Trimming in Bourne End near Maidenhead if you want to contact him. Don't have his number to hand but I can post it up here once I get home if you're interested.

Hi All, on a slightly different tack with roofs, I recently had an attempted break in to my S3, believe it or not they tried to knife through the top panel (tells you something about the mental ability of our local toe rags!). This has now left me with a panel with a spilt about a foot long in the covering material. Anyone had to get one these recovered?

In another thread 'Buying a replacement roof for V8s'

Graham woods talks about a site www.autohoods.co.uk who can replace an entire rear section for £350 and , more applicable to you, recover the Targa panels for £95.
I have no link to original poster or the company, but Im interested in possibly using them If my project to fix my rear roof section fails.

I've just had a complete new rear section fitted, the targa panels re-covered and new roof seals all round.
Total bill including VAT and labour was £870. Now I did have it done at Harrogate HC, so imagine this is the worst case example on cost.
Breakdown was
Hood Assembly £310
Hoop Seal £17.25
Targa edge seals £16.52
Sundries £5.00
Labour £392
Vat £129.63
I do have to say, that the car is now as dry as a bone and hasn't leaked even in the worst of the rains.
