His PC bust, so he's not posted for a while.

He gave it "johnny large potatoes" away from the lights, heard a bang, thought it was the 'box, but it's actually a snapped driveshaft.. but a new one has been ordered and due soon.

I think..

Make sure they replace *both* half shafts not just the broken side.

(They fail due to metal fatigue, and both sides suffer similar stresses.)

Is halfshaft failure common? I like "johnny large potatoes" very much but I don't like "bang"

I went through a few before I had the current uprated ones fitted, but no it isn't a particularly common failure.

The uprated ones were made for me by GKN. They're stronger, and also designed to avoid the circlip groove that causes the problems with the standard shaft. It is quite rare to hear of people breaking half shafts and I'm sure the standard ones are fine for 99.9% of the people, but they do fail from time to time.

I've just supplied a pair of uprated driveshafts to a cerbera owner .. rare as Peter says to have them break but it happens from time to time.

Bear in mind that Pete's V8S has smaller CVs as standard than the Griff/Chimaera/Cerbera so the V8S parts are not as strong as the ones on your car to start with. Havingh said that, it is rear for them to break. The CV joints usually die way before.

new translation: He gave it 'Johnny Large Potatoes' from the lights, then his flat cap fell in front of his eyes so he lobbed his pigeons and whippet out of the window to slow him down but they got caught in his driveshaft, 'and he painted matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs [singalong!!!]

smaller in what way Steve? all the bolt circles are the same and the splines are the same also .. there *are* two types of CV joints but they're identical dimensionally.

Just to clarify: the problem here is not with the CV joint, it is fatigue failure of the half shaft by the groove for the CV joint retaining circlip.

By smaller I really did mean ratings. Both Granny and Sierra Cosworth CVs are the same size. One you can get for around £20-30 the other is around £100. Difference is in the ability to transmit power/torque. Look at the specs and the power ratings are very different. Some suppliers specifiy a difference, some don't. Definitely worth looking beyond the surface.

Again, the problem in this case is half shaft failure not CV failure. I don't recall ever having to replace CVs on the V8S. To be fair the CV joints got replaced when the half shafts failed, but that was quite a rare occurence (2-3 time in 170K miles), in the S2 I was replacing CV joints annually.

I've never offered up the V8S and Chimaera half shafts side by side to see if they are actually identical, but they look the same to me.
