Hey All,

Following my issue with my external HD I think i'm going to get a cheap NAS.

The plan being to get another 320Gb HD to put into the NAS and use the external HD i've currently got as a proper backup!

The NetGear SC101 looks like a good bet. Any one had any experience of them?

Many Thanks,

Phill

Ive got 2 x 250gb running in mine - the latest software is pretty stable, at first there were a few bugs ( as usual!) - on my laptop it worked fine out of the box...but on my desktop I use Daemon tools (virtual drive software) and it didnt seem to like that.

Bare in mind this is a proprietary SAN technology (Zetera) - you need a driver and client software installing on each PC to access it (they install virtual removable SCSI drivers) and it uses IP to communicate over 10/100 ethernet to your router.

theres a fair review here:

www.tomsnetworking.com/2005/10/11/review_sc101/

quite cheap and clever - you can have multiple SC101 on your network, mirror or span between them etc .....

I also have a 'Netgear Toaster' as it has come to be affectionately known by

They do get very hot, but their website says its ok as the electronics are designed to operate within those ranges. I don't care what they say, it's a poor design and it needs some better ventilation or a fan at least... so I run mine with the front cover left off and its a lot cooler. Incidently, I have two 300 gig 7200rpm Maxtors in mine (in RAID1 for data protection) and from previous expereiences they tend to generate a lot of heat anyway.

When I first bought it I was not at all impressed with it because the initial release firmware was truly awful. Now I have the latest Zetera drivers and firmware its better, but still somewhat buggy - I have all my mp3 music on there and use it as a Network music server and CCTV image server. If I had my choice again, I would strongly recommend the Buffalo Terrastation. The main reason is that it has a dual gigabit connection, and copying DVD's across a 100 based network is very time consuming.

I was interested in knowing about spanning multiple units. Thanks for that info I didn't realise you could do that

Would I but one again? No, I would go for the Terrastation, but they are a lot more costly.

Cheers Si, read a few reviews on the Netgear and people have highlighted the same issues as you have.

I've got a 320gb USB Icy Box which has just failed on me. (The HD is fine, its just a problem with the connections on the cradle).

I really want a device that is on my Network so that I can access it from around the house without plugging in a USB device.
