Of course, events that are part of the World Rally Championsghip are quite recent (1981?)

To be fair, that's not altogether clear from your thread title. All RAC Rallies were "world" rallies in that they were open to international competitors. WRC events are obviously different as that Championship only came into being in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

I wasn't having a go at you, just trying to acertain exactly what you meant.

But the British RAC event is part of the WRC in recent years as Eric has pointed out (not sure of the year), its not a separate rally you know..

I do know somewhere in that lot the event has not been part of the WRC very recently but i cannot remember the years (1999 or 2000 rings a bell but i'm probably wrong)

In 1996 the RAC was not part of the Manufacturers world championship ( won by Armin Schwarz, with Stig in a Skoda 3rd)but its always been a part of the drivers world championship since its inception in 1979.

for a bonus point who was the top british finisher that year? and who finished in sixth?

this years its also going to be part of the BRC, for the first time since....??

any guesses?

I remember seeing Schwarz committed on a large hairpin in Resolven that year, very impressive!

There was a bit of an outcry about that see - especially since the reigning champion was McRae.

1979 - Tony Pond?

I'm more confused now. I remember the year i saw Schwarz at Resolfen and thought that was the year it wasnt a round of the WRC, turns out he was in an Escort (i have my photographic proof with an old film camera) and that was 1998, which was also the year Sainz lost the world championship in the last 300 yds, Tommi got pulled for being wheel less, and Richard (RIP mate) won the event. How could i forget?!
It didnt add up in my mind as the extract i put above said that year was Chester (never went to the start that year) and 98 was Cheltenham (remember it well) Also i found out Resolfen wasnt run in 96..

I remember 96 come to think of it when Gwyndaf hit the stump at Chatsworth house and when they interviewed his co driver Howard on tv the interveiwer asked him to one side and said "so do you think you can carry on?" Howard said something along the lines of "what do you recon? the car is !"

Another resource i found but hasnt been updated recently by the looks of it is the www.ukmotorsport.com/uk.html

1996 was the icy non makers champ RAC where both Robbie and Gwyndaf went out on an icy stretch of chastwrth where they both hit the stump/roots with the LH rear. Only Robbie blamed others for his down fall. I co-drove for Bob Ceen in an ex works Mazda 323GpA and we went off when the egine blew up in Gartheiniog, 4 stages from the end while lying 22nd.
