Just pondering on what it is about acceleration that's so addictive when I came across this snippet -- some figures from the flight plan of the latest US shuttle launch. Read it and weep!

Blackpool, England TVR Engineering Ltd today announced their bid to to snatch the World Acceleration Record from the long time holders the North American Space Agency who set the record in 2003 with their 'Space Shuttle' at an astounding 0-920mph in 10 seconds.
A Doddle
Claire Gaffer, Chairperson, speaking today said: "We are confident that our current Hypercar offering the all new TVR Cerbera Speed 144 will be able to snatch the title back to British shores. It has shown some amazing results under test conditions and we at TVR feel that the Space Shuttle was carrying some uneccesary weight".
Since taking the title in 2003 NASA has beaten down challenges from engineers all over the globe including teams such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Smart. Support for TVR though has reached almost a fever pitch in the UK. Support as wide ranging as the Prime Minister and leader of the Pistonhead party [your suggestions...] right through to the Doris Sugden (94) of Anaglypta Mansions, Cleethorpes who was quoted as saying "We'll piss it" earlier on today.
Storming!
The car itself which through use of ultra lightweight components weighs as much as a Kingsize Rizla. It is powered by their new Speed144 powerplant which is effectively made up of 24 of their ultra reliable Speed Six units. This is then mated to a four wheel drive system down to 32" wide spider alloys. Through the use of an exceptionally effective transmission power at the wheels is likely to be in excess of 9600bhp. Slowing down will of course be taken care of by carbon disks and TVR's trademark lack of ABS.For the attempt the car will be finished in a Union Jack paint scheme.

Will they do it? This reporter is of the same opinion as Doris from Cleethorpes, there can be only one outcome and we're not going to unhappy!

Reports are coming in of a road going version of the TVR Cerbera Speed 144 available for sale through the national network of dealers. We have it on good authority that the order books are filling fast. In fact Max Power are rumoured to be doing a 'modded special' including Nitrous Oxide and a rear awning.

Err. Sort of, yes. All to do with escape velocities, related to the srength of the gravitational field. Look at it this way. An old tatty skoda has a very low escape velocity for a PHer, we simple walk past and maybe chuckle. However, a pristine, polished Griff will be almost impossible to escape from. Often, we have to have extra force applied to us to remove us, (better half stomping up and down and sulking).
The Earth is like a Griff, only bigger.
But I'm not getting into another physics discussion as my head hurts enough tonight and I think there are some dangerous impurities in this home made anti flu stuff I'm taking. Can't be the brandy, only just opened the bottle..
Edited to add - someonme post that on the Nova/Max Power site will you? We will get the numptie with the 4 wheel drive 1000 bhp Nova interested in a real car..

In the process they pull 5g and go from 0-325mph+ in under 4.5 seconds.
