RE: Photek's Porsche 968
Discussion
Hi Lozza,
Sorry about the late reply, busy weekend! I bought it from the storage company that look after my other car (MGB GT), the reason it's so cheap is that has absolutely no history (bar a few MOT's). It was in storage with them for the best part of 6 years - then all of a sudden the owner stopped paying and was never seen or heard from again - so they took legal ownership of the car to cover the monies owed to them. Then in Oct when I was back in the UK I went to pick up the MG and mentioned that I was looking for something else a bit reliable
Originally I was going to buy a BMW E30 M3 - but when offered a low mileage (32,000) 968 CS for 7.5 Grand what are you to do
Obviously I was a bit wary about no history so I sent it down to Lancaster Cambridge and they did a full check on the car and came back with a list of bits and bobs - one of which was the gearbox pinions are buggered, apparently this was a problem of too many shims in the gearbox on the early 968's. They generously offered to fix for somewhere between 1500 -2000 pounds, so it was promptly dispatched to a local gearbox specialist and sorted for half the price, still using pucka Porsche parts. Just to be on the safe side I also had a 48,000 mile service done with cam chain change, new front discs and pads and last but by no means least - new tyres all round.
Sorry about being so long winded
Cheers,
David

Thanks for the reply.
I'm 1/2 thinking about one as a daily driver - have you had any other 'issues'? Your costs for brake parts don't seem too bad, I thought Porsches were a bit spendy, or is it just that you haven't had to do any of the spendy bits...
I presume the idea is to find a local specialist who charges down-to-earth rates.
Intersting car - plus I like the colour! Let me know if you get bored with it!

So far it's been ok with regard to running cost's, like you said I think the idea is to find a local specialist that does'nt charge the earth. Although saying that my car is now over 10 years old and I think that OPC's have a reduced rate for cars over 3, 5 and 10 years old - so it might not be sooo bad at your local OPC.
I doubt I'm going to get bored with it any time soon
I just use it occasionally when I back in the UK, so I've barely had time to get used to it. I plan to try a trackday in it sometime soon and I might go for a European road trip in it (Autobahns here we come!).
Cheers,
David

Thom - just had a look at your profile and I have to say thats a lovely looking 944. Did the new brakes hoses make much difference? I've just had EBC grooved and dimpled front discs fitted along with green stuff pads and they seem to be very nice - althought to be honest the 968 has never really had a brake problem

Hi David,
Thanks for the picture: it really is a nice one
Re the new brake hoses - as you see in my profile I fitted them before putting the Konis on. In other words my previous shocks were the standard Sachs and they were totally worn out; as such there was very little difference with the new hoses because the car used to "dive" on each stab on the brakes.
In my case I just bothered putting these for the sake of superior reliability.
As far as I know they are really worth it if you already have a decent chassis set-up - stiff shocks and big brakes.
Anyway for a mere £40 it would be stupid not to put them
