Thanks - are you saying that a general bodyshop should be trusted with a new Porsche? It's silver and I've heard that colour matching is difficult

Scratches of this sort of size are the bread and butter work for the likes of Chipsaway/Car Medic franchises. If you go to an OPC the chances are they will get their local franchisee to come and and fix it without sending it to the bodyshop.
If you go direct, Chipsaway will likely charge you £100-£150 - a bodyshop will repaint the whole panel and probably charge you £500 or so. If you are dissatisfied with the Chipsaway solution you can always opt for the bodyshop later if you want.

I would reccomend a good bodyshop, tbh the best ones tend to be the smaller independents, run out of small premises that take care and pride in their work, go round a few and ask to see their work, and whichever one shows you a car that you can't tell has been sprayed go with them. This job will cost £200 ish.
Big body shops tend to get a bit blase, unless you go to a very reputable one eg. porsche approved, in this case it will cost £500 ish.
I would never reccomend chips away type smart repairs, having worked in the trade and used them the quality of the work is not high, they usually spray outside or in the back of a garage, and all they do is blend in to the panel using a small touch in gun or airbrush, you can nearly always tell it has been painted particularly on metallics, please don't trust your new Porsche to them, the only reason dealers use them is they are quick and cheap and get the car out without 90% of people noticing on the forecourt.

Wildoliver and Computamedic, thanks. The trouble is, I think I'm one of the 90% who wouldn't notice...! I'll have a look at some bodyshops.

the're a franchise so i guess vary from area to area.
if you're in the cambridge area i can certainly recomend them. the quality of the work is perfect to my eye and the price a fraction of a bodyshop. i'd have no hesitation taking either porsche to them.
(to be honest and clear they are also freinds of mine but i wouldnt recomend them if they didnt warrant it)
Chips Away couldn't match the paint on my silver RX7, they gave up in the end and wiped off all the paint they'd applied using a special solvent. It cost me about £700 at a 'proper' bodyshop and the repair was invisible. You get what you pay for, I swore I'd never buy another silver car but I now own a silver 996 C2!!!!!!
A lot of OPCs outsource their paintwork to third party independents anyway (similar to alloy refurbs) - so identify which bodyshop your local OPC uses and go direct, saving a wedge of margin.
Colour matches etc. are not a problem for a good independent - I have used a great one in Battersea down by Plantation Wharf but I can't remember their name or dig out any details. They did a perfect colour match on my Carbon Black M3 - a tricky colour.
