The old pinking problem

The Griff has started pinking and tends to do it under heavy throttle...however last night whilst heading home at 10pm it drove spot on no pinking at all.
My question is does cooler air make a difference and if so should I be looking at better cooling?
It runs with good oil pressure, good tempertaure never runs too hot etc, its run on optimax although the last drop was unleaded as I got stranded.
Your thoughts please folks.
