Hi All,

I've been trying to decide what to do about a car next and I'm looking to sell mine then buy a very cheap car until I can sort finances and decide what I really want. I've seen a few 89 Supra Turbos for below £1000, are they likely to be as reliable as I think and does anyone have any experience with cheap high milleage supras?

I'd be looking for having it for anywhere upto 6 months and don't really want any hassle and I just thought a supra might be more fun than a merc 190E, any other suggestions are welcome!

Cheers

Friend of mine picked up a N/A auto for £600.

It lasted a little over 6 months before the head blew. Reasonable, considering how he drove it...

I've got a 1992 3.0 Turbo.

They can go on to really high mileages.

Mine has 143k on the clock and is going intomorrow for two new rocker gaskets, as oil is leaking onto the exhaust manifold.

Common things to go are Head Gaskets, mine went before I got the car at between 60 & 70k.There was a new turbo and crankshaft fitted at around 67k after the BHG.

Another problem is the exhaust manifold parting company with the head, when cold it makes a blowing, leaking exhaust noise, until warm and the gap closes up. Took Toyota a few attempts to get it right!!

I've needed now lower wishbones at about 90-100k, (bushes had gone).

Withing the last 10k I've had the oil pump pulley come loose. To properly fix it it would be an engine out job. I've had a temporary repair done and it seems ok at the moment.

I have been told it will need new rear brake lines soon and new discs.

They are a bargain, you get a lot for your money, but you can spend a lot more than the car is worth if you get engine problems.

The good points, it still has the original exhaust (14 years and 143,000 miles), original starter motor, alternator, ancilliaries. I goes really well, will cruise comfortably at 90 all day.

Did from Exeter down to Newquay, to St Ives, Penzance, back to Newquay, down to St Agnes, then back home to Langdon Hills, near Basildon, Essex, all in one day ( about 600 or so miles).

Great car

Thanks for the replies chaps, just been having a look over on the MK3 Supra forum and it seems that probably the ones that are really chap are that way for a reason but when I get my car sold I'll still try and have a look around for one as they do see to be a good cheap fun buy.

Does anyone know how much you'd be looking at to get the head gasket done assuming the head is still ok? And does anyone have any other ideas for very cheap fun reliable cars?

Well I picked up a cheap fun car yesterday, Mazda 626 GT for £68. Engine is in top condition, need to get it mot'd to see if there's any work needing doing, then it will be taking part in a banger rally to Prague in september.

I was out of the jap club for 2 days after selling my MR2 on friday, but buying that beast has allowed me back in...

I have bills for between £2,500 and £3,000, which included a new Turbo and Crankshaft.

That was through warranty at Toyota though.
