997 GT3 (or GT3) v Corvette ZO6

Just read a thread unfavourably comparing 997 Turbo against 500bhp Corvette ZO6.
As no doubt as good a musclecar as the ZO6 is , surely the latest generation 997 extrememobiles have little to fear from America's finest.
I have great respect for Corvettes and love to see them roaring through the night at Le Mans, but until their maker produces them with a steering wheel on the right side, why should we take them seriously over here?

Because, it has sensational looks, 505bhp 475lb ft and racing heritage all for £60,000. The location of the steering wheel isn't everything, as owners of lhd GT3s and 964RS will no doubt testify.
Its not just the steering wheel. As EVO magazine testifies, on bristish roads which arent smooth, and have corners (shock horror!) the Z06 doesnt have anywhere near the composure and feeback of a 997 would. Also hasn't it still got leaf springs? It's a good car, but the 997 is a great car, and will always be a league above the Z06. Its not what you can put down on paper that makes the 997 better (although i'm sure a ring lap time would work).
I definitely think the Z06 is a very interesting car. There aren't many things more lovely than that 500 BHP Chevy V8.
But for me, that's the point really......the Chevy V8. That would be the reason for me buying a Corvette.
Which brings me onto my latest silly idea for daily wheels. What about a Monaro? You get the Chevy V8 in those of course. The VXR versions have lots of muscle, either 5.7 or 6.0 versions are fine. I know the know the economy is dreadful (14 mpg in town according to Autocar) but what a lovely lovely engine. You get a huge boot (on the earlier cars), 4 seats (adult sized), a monster stereo by all accounts......and a sort of charming blue collar image, completely no nonsense, like an Ozzie spoiling for a fight in an outback boozer.
I bet they would never break down either.
So by getting a Monaro VXR I would be getting my Chevy V8 and a family car thrown in for free. I need a V8 of some sort in my life. May as well get the best one, the Chevy (until that new Merc 6.3 comes out I suppose).
What do you guys think?

If you need a 'V8 fix' including 4 doors/seats, then surely the E39 M5 BMW needs serious consideration.
I've had 60k miles out of mine including a couple of laps on the 'Ring' and still love it to bits.The new M5 is needless to say a stunning car, but that certainly does not make the previous model a bad one!

Mate, I have thought about the E39 M5. I am a big beemer fan. I have been 'round Croft as a passenger in an E39 M5 and it was impressive. The thing with the Monaro is that I would expect its running costs to be lower than the E39 M5. What do you think?

I've had the M5 for nearly 5 years and its now done 60k.Its still on its original clutch, has had new pads ,a fuel pump and usual service things ; its been a most well behaved daily mount! It does consume gallons of mysterious M5 oil for which M5s are renowned.Might even try to chip it now it's so outdone by its new sibling!
I think these will become much sought after in the future at a third the price of a new one.

If you're after a V8 'fix' at least go and try the RS4. Yes I know its an Audi but it really has got a lot more feel and character than the prev. one and a V8 soundtrack to die for. plus four seats, loads of space and superb build quality. It's really quite quick too! A fair bit quicker than the 6L Monaro which I thought felt a bit of a heavy old bus and which doesn't come close to either new or prev. M5 for driver satisfaction IMO.

Indeed, and given that its underwritten based on the expected maintenance costs (at a rate the dealer wouldn't offer you), it makes you wonder just how much these cars fall apart! Perhaps they are entering a Mercedes phase?
To be honest the M5 has had light use simply doing the 'office run' for most of its life.
It is going in for some work this week as the engine has been a bit 'off' for a while.
I am trying out an independent for the first time rather than a mains dealer.Why not?
