Changing Ignition Barrel on Escort/Orion...
Discussion
Well, got my new door lock kit yesterday. Kit includes 2 door locks, boot lock, pertol cap barrel and ignition barrel. Door locks, simple, boot lock, easy but I haven't got the right headed tool to undo the securing nut, petrol cap is easy enough but haven't got a petrol cap at the mo. The only one I'm struggling with is the Ignition Barrel, and the haynes manual is about as useful as a chocolate fire guard
Now, I've got the Steering Column Shroud off, removed the multiplug from the other end of the barrel, but it doesn't matter how much I wiggle, twist, push or pull, the damn barrel will not move.
Anyone changed the barrel before?
HELP!
Stuart.

I may be able to shed some light on it - i had to change the barrel on a friends Mk6 Escort (P plate). I THINK we either twisted it, or removed all the stuff on the opposite end to where the key goes in, then it just came out. Also, theres a little pin that you need to push in, in order to release the barrel.
This will probalby only be of use if you have a Mk6, but you dont state which year your car is!
Hope this helps!

Dave, car is a '93 Orion (but I said escort in the title cos it's an identicle car, except the boot).
Thank you to you both, when I finished my dinner I will brave the rain and the cold to go out and change it. There is very little (if any) in the workings of the Escort/Orion over the years, the haynes manual only gives differences on certain things, so hopefully it will work.
This "Spring Loaded pin" - is this the pin the round black module is connected too which has 4 wires soldered to the connection on the back, the one that with the key in, sticks out another half inch?

No M8, there should be a little steel spring loaded pin that you can see from underneath IIRC.
Put the key in the barrel and the pin should be pushed in with a small screwdriver.
If you dont use the key, itll be impossible to withdraw the barrel cos the internals will lock it up.
Hope this helps.

The only one I'm struggling with is the Ignition Barrel,
1. remove the shroud
2. Insert key and turn to position 1
3. press the locking pin (at about the 1 o'clock pos, and quite near the key end) with a pointy implement, and pull out using the key.
4. You might need to twist the barrel slightly as you're pulling.
HTH. I can mail you a picture to locate the pin if you need it.

Thanks all!
I did it! Now everything works using the new key! Except the damn boot because the holding nut is rusted in postion
That pin isn't exactly visible! I think Henry intended it to be a 'dealer only job'
Now I just need to sort the Alarm Activation thingy on the Drivers door, and it's good to go!
