Fuel Gauge Sender Unit ??

Mines been playing up for a bit, now it shows full when the fuel is right up the filler neck and empty about 20 miles later with the odd back to full, Me thinks I need a new one, What are they off ?? or where can I get one ??

Call carparts again - the unit we removed from Beastie's 400SE was maked as 'TVR' and I'm sure he said it was a Griff 500 unit.

Ask it it's the same size.

The Griff has the same tank as the Chimaera, I no longer use the OEM tank in the Chimaera racer, and the fuel sender is still in it. Give me some dimensions/pictures etc and I'll see what I can do to confirm if it's the same!

Just to help you remove it - the circular metal disc holds the
sender unit in place.

To remove it you have to twist it (tap up with a hammer & strewdriver)

Don't just pull it as you will bend it out of shape and it will
be scrap.

You could also try David Gerald - they are very helpful in location wedge bits too..

It's probably an open-frame device wound with resistance wire.
Count the turns, unravel and rewind with new wire. Or, if there's an obvious break near one end, rewind minus the broken section Just means the gauge will read more or less than normal. If there's such a thing as normal on a Wedge...

Thanks Wedg1e I think that sounds like the best bet I will pull it to bits and see what happens.

Any idea of fuel level is better than no idea

One more tip - make sure you have a low fuel level before you
remove it for obvious reasons..

Thanks Wedg1e. Right again , broken resistance wire in the middle total mess, where do I get this wire from? wound it with 5 amp fuse wire (a bit too thick)now empty reads half, half full reads full, better than nothing but I would like to get it a bit closer

Hells' teeth, I dunno where you'd get resistance wire these days! I used to have a reel of it, x ohms per foot, but ISTR lending it to a mate and never saw it again.

Once upon a time I daresay Maplins sold it but they're absolutely w@nk for electronics bits nowadays (unless it comes prepacked, with 'Blingin' on the front )

Maybe RS, or root around the electronics magazine advertisers? Even, I daresay, the internet

If you hadn't already unwound it I'd have suggested twisting the broken ends together: as long as you had the twist away from the 'wiper' it'd probably work fine...

post a pick of the sender unit i got a kit car catalouge with 3 or 4 universal sender unit which might be made to fit

The baffle has not worked for a while so the float was free to bounce up and down this caused a great deal of wear in the centre and 50% of the wire was fauackered I tried to repair it but just ended up with alot of short lengths of wire
Me thinks I will get of down the scrappy and see what I can find sticking out the back of an escort, Cortina or Granada.

i was hopeing i could match up your sender unit as mine is doing the same a it would have saved me taking mine out to check i will keep you posted when i take it out but it might be a month or two untill i get around to doing it.

Maplin do 28swg resistance wire but that might be a bit too thick. It's only 4.2 ohms/m.

Best thing to do is get someone to measure the resistance of a good sender unit and then work out the approx length of the winding.

Thanks everyone, I have some wire I whipped out of a sender unit in a mini !!! Looks the same, I will rewind with that and see if its any good. I dont expect a perfect result, just a good idea of how much motion lotion is in there.

Did a rewind with the Mini wire and now have some kind of reading, fulls about full, halfs about half and empty is about time to panic
The sender must be off something but its got no markings on it besides 12V.
