My PC told me an update was available and it also wanted to install Defender: www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

As I already have Zone Alarm (free version) and AdAware, is it really necessary/better? Will it do anything covertly, as MS software seems to have a reputation for?

Microsoft Defender is AFAIK the new name for their MS Antispyware software which has been very good so far.

It also needs XP Service Pack 2, which I have been loathe to install because of the reports of problems with other things.

It looks at the spyware issue in a different way to all the other spyware checkers.

I'd have it on but only run it once a week rather than daily.

Yeah I agree with Plotloss.

I tried it running on Windows Vista and it can quickly become very frustrating with all of the pops ups and the like.

For now I run webroots Spysweeper which is by the far the best at the moment IMHO.
