I was looking to buy a 2nd hand Griff 500 but I have been informed recently by an engine developer that the Griff actually produces between 250 to 270bhp as standard and not the 320bhp as stated by TVR (assuming constant load on the dyno and a steady state dyno reading).

Can anyone shed light on this (confirm or otherwise etc)?

Yup, with all ancillaries (alternator, pumps etc) many 5L TVR engines read about that amount of power on many rolling roads. (TVRs figures are from bench tested engines)
Actual performance figures are accurate (0-60, top speed etc)
Do a search of the archives & you will find many threads discussing this very subject.

Try test driving a few - they are as fast as most things out there (be careful at the mo - they are a lot easier to handle in the summer, when temperatures rise.....)

Sorry, but it sounds to me like you want to play Top Trumps with your mates, if the numbers matter more than the car. Perhaps Sir would prefer a Subaru Imprezza WRX STi, a Mitsubishi Evo6, or a tuned Supra?

Have you driven one yet? If not then wait for a dry day & have a go. You simply will not care how accurate the figures are, this is one of the most awsome cars on the road.
Theres been a bucket load of discussion about this, & I can understand your concerns, but trust me...it doesnt matter!!

Nick
Griff 500
340 bhp minus 280 bhp = stupid grin

340 bhp minus 280 bhp = 60bhp which i would be concerned about

I have test driven a three cars, 2 went really well, one seemed to be lacking power? (all about the same mileage and with service histories)

At this time of year the prices should be lower but as a previous reply said it will be best to wait for better weather to drive one, I agree with that one!

Its not top trumps, its a case of working out what I am getting for my hard earned cash. If there is a missing 60 bhp this is significant enough to wonder what else is a miss? I guess if the power is down then there is lots of scope to find the extra power with mods etc ;-)

The reason the choosing the 500 is not only the looks and its feel but it also has a big v8, fantastic noise!

I think Sgirls (correct me if i is wrong) was dynoed at just over 300bhp.
Thats more than enough when u consider the power to weight ratio. 0-60 in 4.2 and 0-100 in 10.2 and top speed somewhere in the 160's, and an awsome sound freom that Vee8 what more could u want.

Find me a car where the maker claims 320bhp that really delivers that output AND goes harder than a Griff 500 and you've found my next car.

regarding the manufacture's power output figures, would I be right in saying that ALL manufacture's use the engine's power output, and not what's actually being put down at the wheels?
If that is true to the larger extent, most other cars bhp figures should be relative to TVRs, shouldn't they?
I know MG publish their cars output at the engine also, I guess it just looks better, that is untill you drive a car pertaining to have 160 bhp, and you know it's just not there!!!

Had mine at Power Engineering with Mark Adams a while back.............. It produces 280BHP , but more importantly 286lb/ft Torque for most of its rpm range....

To put this in perspective the power at the wheels (PAW) was 224bhp (lets say a 20% loss)

Now take the weight into account (1060kg) and you have
264bHP per ton (or 211bhp per ton at the wheels)

If you look through the figures on other cars then you will see why the Griff can shift so well. Then of course you drive a well sorted one and all the numbers pale into insignificance as aura of the of a TVR is addictive..

J,
If I took my Chim 450 to Mark adams, would he be able to liberate a few more horses ie- tune the engine for optimum efficiency whilst checking it on the rolling road? If so, how much is a session with him, as I have a couple of 'flat spots' when accelerating which I'd love to get ironed out.

Cheers

BB, you're right - mine was dynoed at 302 BHP. It's plenty. The bottom-end torque more than makes up for the "missing" BHP, and if you had a lot more power than that it'd start getting difficult to handle...

That'd be the Tamora or T350C then Paul Rich... (so they say)
