Afternoon gents.

I need a program that will enable me to back-up several thousand files (4 DVDs worth) to several DVDs. However, I then need to be able to simply copy the backed-up files from the discs, in turn, without the need for running a "restore" program at the other end.

I've only got Nero to hand and that almost does it, the only problem being it's insistence of splitting files across discs.

Any suggestions, preferably free?

Zip it into 4 DVD size image files and then burn each one individually.

When you open the file it asks you for the DVD's in order.

Works just like it did for floppies.

Is this proper machineage or your turtle neck nonsense?

If its the latter then obviously you'll probably have to buy some yellow lense glasses, have a salad and use an oversized TFT monitor.

Um, not quite sure what you mean?

If you want to automatically extract the saved files using the original file/folder structure I would recommend using WinRAR, using it's one click autoextract feature. RAR up the files (they will become smaller of course (may only need 2 DVD's) in 4GB chunks just in case you need to copy them to seperate discs (choosing the autoextract feature) using NERO.

Then when you want to restore them, just copy the 2 RAR files from the DVD's back onto your hard disc and double click the main one, and tell it where to extract them to.

Robert will then be your mothers brother.

Does that help, or different to what you want?

Ah, didn't know you could do that - specify sizes of chunk into which to compress.

And no, of course it's not on the Mac. If it was, I wouldn't be asking.

Having said that, ideally, dragging and dropping of the DVDs content at the other end would be the best solution.

It's for my brother, see, and he's a bit wet behind the ears. If I mention the words "install WinRAR" to him he just might faint.
