996 crankshaft oil seal

Hi all,

My brother has a 996 cab 3.4 on a Y plate.

The crankshaft oil seal was changed under warranty at 2 years old as oil was leaking and the clutch was slipping.

The fault has now reoccurred at about 30,000 miles and the dealer will not pay anything towards it.

Has anyone else come across this problem? I suspect a design / quality problem here...

If you search on RMS (Rear Main Seal) in the forum you'll find lots of info on it. They do go from time to time. My advice, replace the clutch at the same time as it would be a fair way through it's service life after 30K miles.

Guys,

No wind up at all Im not a Porsche owner - I take it this is well known then?

I did various searchs but not the exact wording shown...

Hes been quoted £1000 by porsche to fix it - sound about right?

Notice some people have had total engine rebuilds what is the reason for this?

Just googled Rear main seal...

This seems to go back at least 25 years on 911s and also is well known on boxsters and caymans

How long do Porsche need to sort this out?

Y'know , we could do what the boys in blue did during the war , dropping chaff to confuse enemy radar .. Just put RMS into every post from now on .. That should make for a fun search ..
