I have a recurring problem trying to connect to Wanadoo. I could be connected for ½ hour then the connection stops an error message comes up saying “unable to connect no dial tone”.

The phone works ie dial tone and can dial out and receive calls. I have checked the modem and it can detect a dial tone. I have a Dell pc and can connect through Dell’s free internet access but not though Wanadoo.

Anyone know whats going wrong. Im on unlimited dial-up as my old pc wont accept Wanadoo’s broadband.

Sorry if I don’t reply for awhile as I might get kicked off as even the Dell connection wont stay connected

First question is do you have 'Call waiting' on your line. If you do, the call waiting tones can cause some modems to disconnect.

Second, do you use BT Answer 1571? If you do then the interrupted dial tone can cause some modems to assume there is no dial tone. The cure for this is to tick the box in the modem properties that says 'Do not wait for dial tone'.

Mine does this from time to time. Reboot usually fixes it.

Is it always afterthe connection has been up for the same time? Some places force you to hang up after the connection has been up for a predetermined time. From the sound of it they *shouldn't* be doing this on your connection, but you never know ...

It's likely due to one of the issues already mentioned. If you have call waiting, make sure that the telephone number your modem is dialling is prefixed by the code that disable call waiting for the next call.

Secondly, if it's disconnecting and then tries to reconnect but finds no dial tone, it's likely because of the 'two-tone' dial tone when you have a 1571 message waiting.

What I'd do is get the modem to dial blind. To do this, go into Phone and Modems in Control panel (assuming XP here) and then to Modems Tab. Choose the modem then select properties and then advanced. In the extra initialisation string box put in X0 (that's X zero). This will get it to dial without checking for a dial tone.

Hope this helps,

Roop (Mr Hayes 'Attention' Command Set )
