Whoops - Suspension

Heard a loud clonking noise on Sunday whilst out hooning, so whilst I had the car jacked up to do an oil change last night I gave it a good look over and discovered the f/n/s shock had torn itself out of the bottom arm
Luckily I have a couple of spare bottom arms, just hoping it hasn't damaged the shock.

Wow! thats the first time I have heard of that happening, scary looking pictures.
If you find yourself stuck for a replacement I have a Cortina wishbone if its any good to you.

Thanks Andy,

Luckily I have a complete spare front end set-up from the chassis I bought last year. Having removed the offending item it definitely looks like metal fatigue. To be expected I suppose after nearly 20 years of fairly hard use, with a good deal stiffer set-up than was originally envisaged on a Cortina

The 520SE was cracking them in the middle. Declared the wishbone a consumable until I did the redesign. Part of the problem is the suspension design is not very good and the wishbone tends to twist rather than move up and down. This puts additional strain in the wishbone. If the suspension is stiffened up considerably then the problem is made worse.

BTW worth looking at the uprights to see if there are any cracks and if the suspension turrets have bent under the strain.

Yep very true something to keep an eye on especially with the age of the original wishbones. I wonder if its worth reinforcing them at all

Steve, I should of guessed if there was a weakness there the 520 would have already found it
