I have a client who uses outlook. There is nothing in her outbox. Everything has been sent, outbox has no emails in it visually. This is confirmed by the "There are no items in this view" message.

Yet, every time she clicks send/receive, she receives an error message saying "unable to send items 1 of 1" or similar.

Can anyone help think of a possible cause/solution?

There should be some details on that "unable to send message" dialogue box. Do you know them?

Wrong POP3 (if using it)... Firewall... all sorts.

As said, get the error details

Right, the message is:

(with *clients name edited*)

"Task '*Clients name - Account name* - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B): The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) Server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)."

Why is it timing out, if that is whats happening, when there is no mail in the outbox. Im probably missing something obvious, but I cant cant see what it is

Check the SMTP server is correctly listed in Outlook (Tools -> Email accounts)

If you're using POP3 with Yahoo (for example) you need to turn on POP3 access within Yahoo first...

Try this

www.outlook-tips.net/howto/delete_rr.htm

I had the same problem and error message when I recently migrated to a new laptop. I'm not sure whether if was moving the PST files or downloading all the mail off the server that caused it, but I found 2 emails with 'stuck' read receipts. OutlookSpy fixed it straight off.

Failing that, of you Google for that error code you'll get loads of hits, including KB articles from MS.

Cheers. Ive double checked, but will check again.

edited to add, it cant be this, as she is able to send and receive emails ok. We went over everything today. The message is quite bizarre

http://support.microsoft.com/default.

There are plenty of potential fixes if you search for that code 0x8004210B on the microsoft support. The one I've posted basically says you should delete the account and re-create it.

Hope that helps.

In this scenario I always do this simple test first from the suspect machine using telnet.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/15311

Then you know for certain if it's a transport or client issue.

Just to reiterate, my error message was exactly the same as the one your client is seeing (except in my case it was 2 emails). Otherwise sending and receiving worked fine.

It's caused (in my case) by trying to send a receipt to a non-existing (or one that has been ceased) domain.

Thanks to Everyone(!) for the suggestions, I'll go through them with her one by one.

She did mention a receipt. When i asked her if the two events coincided, she said she really wasnt sure. I asked if they happened on the same day, or within a few days, or even within a few weeks of eachother, but she said she just couldnt remember.

Apparently the poor girl fell down the stairs and landed on her head some years ago, and hasnt been quite the same since

If you're doing this remotely then I think the OutlookSpy (to delete dodgy read receipts) process would be pretty tricky to talk someone through to be honest.
