Appreciate your help guys.
I've had my 996 Targa now for almost 30 months and am getting repeatedly a yellow sludge under the cap of my oil filler (from new). It's similar to a leaking headgasket sludge but Porsche here say there's nothing to worry about....
well I'm not sure, especially as the local dealer has just lost Porsche, and a new Porschezentrum has been built 4kms away....
Is it really a problem because of the flat cylinder configuration or am I being fobbed off with a possible expensive repair out of guarantee?

Do you do lots of short journeys where the engine doesn't get a chance to get fully up to temp?

I believe it's nothing to worry about , as long as it's only a small amount (say , a couple of thimbles full ). It's just water vapour condensing on the cap .. The worry would be if the coolant was getting in thru a cracked head .. but there'd be much more sludge in evidence. Hope this helps.

Yes, my trip into work is only 5kms, then lunchtime home then back then return at night...but I do do some really long fast hispeed trips during the week.....

About a soup spoons worth, every oil fill-up i.e. every 2-3000 km approx....Thanks!!!

It's condensation/water in the engine not getting opportunity to get 'boiled off' - not uncommon. Just keep on cleaning it off and you should be ok but it does mean your engine is suffering lots of wear from all the cold starts it's having to do.
