For home use the free versions of Zone Alarm and AVG will do the job admirably

I'll second free Zone Alarm and AVG and add in spybot - Search and Destroy to the mix

I also bought the OEM version of Symantec Internet Security for my GF's laptop to keep her happy which I thought was a bit of a bargin at £27 delivered

I use

AVG
ZoneAlarm
Spybot
AdAware
Microsoft Defender
CloudNet

All sitting behind a hardware firewall.

Those b*stards can keep out!

I don't think that is excessive enough...at one point at home I had two corporate hardware firewalls both NATing etc....

I decided it was a bit over the top and now ony have one plus Zone Alarm etc etc.

Anti Virus ... I prefer Avast to AVG but both do the job for free admirably. Just Avast comes with telephone support, AVG doesnt. If you have a broadband router, turn the stateful firewall on.

Software firewall, Zone Alarm is pretty much the defact standard these days, even in free form.

CloudNet

I can vouch for plotloss's choices as I use them all myself except this one. What is CloudNet? - not come across it before...

In theory one hardware firewall should be enough, as long as it can do stateful packet inspection. Coupled with ZA, you should be fine. Can't really do anything if you end up being DOS'd though
