Insuring a courtesy car yourself - is this standard?

Just booked my car into Reading OPC for next week and was suprised to hear that I need to insure the courtesy car myself. I've never heard of this anywhere before but they tell me it is standard practice. Is it??

Standard for OPC or industry standard? Never had to do this with BMW or Merc. Just strikes me as a pain in the backside.

No, but a high excess using their insurance is normal.

Just had a VW courtesy car. You can use their insurance on a £1000 excess. Did make me drive it v. carefully...

True. I have been offered the choice by some dealerships.

Given the choice of a nominal charge (£5 or even FOC) to use my own insurance complete with excess levels etc. chosen by me and the risk of using theirs FOC with an enormous excess, I've always used my own...

Yep - always been the case for me, OPC or not.
Check your policy though, as it may automatically cover your for a courtesy car FOC (mine does - Norwich Union Direct)

JZ Machtech request you insure their cars yourself (doesn't seem cheeky at all, surely no OPC is obligated to make courtesy cars available let alone insure them, I see it as a goodwill gesture)

Goodwill? Hardly - it's all priced into the high cost of servicing.

Agree. Should be part of the service when you are getting a fleecing from a big org like the OPC network. With the indies I don't mind not getting a courtesy car as I'm saving pennies.

Yes OPC East London have same policy - self insure for their loan cars..

I'm wondering if it is worth it - all the hassle and the additional premium (likely).

I may just hang around while the service is being done

Hang on a sec - courtesy cars are usually Cayenne's which are in a lower insurance bracket than a 911 (not sure about a Boxster) so shouldn't be an increase in premium (just been though exactly this scenario today).

Yes - my local garage. Had to pay £7 but he let me take his '03 STI with 350gg's. Not quick enough though.

OPC in colchester will insure FOC only if its a warranty claim. They charge £15 or DIY.. Mind you I've had a few Boxters and I know they've got a 997 aswell...

Apparently all OPC's now have to supply a 'porsche' for courtesy cars...

Yes this is normal but should not cost any additional premium. Remember that you can only drive one car at a time so you should just inform them and that is it. Not a lot of hassle involved.

My opc didn't charge me (insurance wise) for the loaner .. It's worth putting up a fight at least.

Just checked my policy and I'm covered by default, so no probs.

A bloody Cayenne !!! I wanted to drive the a*se off one of their 997S's for the day

They were obviously confident you would return it with the RMS intact
