Has anyone heard of anyone putting a Flat-6 into an Ultima? I know with some proper mods, a 3.6 TT will put out 600+hp nicely! Sounds like fun to me

I would have thought it ideal as they use a Porsche transaxle anyway. Its probably lighter and has a lower centre of gravity too...

Only one thing I can say on the Subject AIR FLOW.
Even the water cooled versions need some airflow that you are not going to get in that position. That one would definatly overheat. Plus what a Poxi sound V8 Rules......

Ps nice gearbox though..

Would you not have to mount the engine upside down? The Porsche is REAR engine Not MID-ENGINED. Just a thought.

Anyhow, as Clive said ..... Who wants a Hoover when you can have an Ultima. It would sound all wrong. IMHO!!

No, just mount the gearbox upsidedown like they do with it to install the chevy mid mounted!

Hmm, dunno, the air flow is do-able, especially from the side airflow ingress and the top ducting on a GTR

Would the GKN's on the driveshafts cope after inverting the G50 when attached to the Porsche flat 6. I think not

Would the transmission not need to be mounted the right way up to mate up too the engine ...... If so, would you not have the fastest reversing car in the world with upto six reverse gears and only one forward gear? (sounds like an Italian tank)

I'm just trying to bet my head around the concept of turning an engine and transmission round, would it run backwards?

Aparently (I am told) you can turn some internals around inside the gearbox that reverses it.

I think someone here told me that!

Yes you can in the early 915 boxes but the G50 I don't know.

There is a kit of a 917 in the USA which does have a Mid engined Flat six so it can be done.

http://project917.itgo.com/index.htm

The car is Complete just needs engine and box. $45,000

Is that last line an ironic statement?

Sounds like a Ted Marlow quote to me. We got up to £40k and he said, "Well that's it then. All you need now is the engine "

Still, if you're going to do something .....

I mean the late 917/30 were 1200hp flat-12's...It seems like they would have gotten about the same amount of air as an Ultima. They didn't have huge air scoops, Just a large fan mounted on top of the engine.
Some of us, find the sound of air being blown that fast, as nice as a large V-8.

Eh, Okay mating the box to the Porsche engine would need some kind of wacky adaptor...

But when you install the Porsche Box in the Ultima you actually mount it upside down, thus enabling you to have 5 forward gears!!!! The same pricaple you'd apply when bringing the Porsche 6 boxster to the mid mounted position (because you would be turning the engine by 180 degrees).

And whats that about the GKN's? They cope fine after the inversion of the gearbox connected to a 500bhp+ Chevy block.

(have I lost the plot or do you want me to draw pictures )

Most who post in here know that, we have built our own!!

So, I have to get a wacky adaptor plate to mount a Porsche 'box to a Porsche engine, but I want to invert the 'box? Hmmmm Try explaining that one to a plate manufacturer.

And whats that about the GKN's? They cope fine after the inversion of the gearbox connected to a 500bhp+ Chevy block.

One of us must have ......... please draw the piccies.

Well if the stud pattern is identicle on the engine to that of the gearbox (when its inverted) then no, but otherwise potentially you would, sorry I dont have a G50 box at work so maybe someone else can check!

I think we are both singing the same tune but not on the same wave length

Sorry Bud I think you will find a Dirty great hole about 18" in Diameter directly above the fan in the 917. Plus the area directly above the engine was also designed to aid the engine cooling. You would have to make some heavy duty mods to the body.
If you want to fitt a Flat 6 then build a 917, Ultimas where designed for Big V's...

not strictly true Clive Ultimas were actually design for a V6 but have since been modified to take a V8
