First noticed it during acceleration as a momentary loss of power - probably less than half a second. Intermittent fault. Last night driving in the dark with headlights on the loss of power occured but I noticed that all the electrics cut out too at the same time, again it was only for the blink of an eye. As I pulled into the garage the fans cut in and provoked the transient shutdown again.

I had initially thought I had an engine electronics problem. But the lights going out at the same time suggests something more fundamental. Could this be the fuselink on the way out?

Thanks for any suggestions

I would suspect the multiplug between the ignition switch and the main loom, it is a notorious weak spot and can cause total failure like this.

Thanks - is that a dashboard lid off sort of job? Or is the multiplug accessible from the foot well? Replacement multiplug or just ensuring the connectors have good contacts?

I just remembered that I asked for the fuselink to be replaced as a preventative measure at the last service - I'd be disappointed to find that it wasn't done.

Fusible link I would have thought would just result in the battery gradually going flat?

The connector is inside the steering column binacle, a few inches away from the ignition switch. Just follow the wires back and it is obvious.

I've had two vaguely similar things:

The 80amp fuse in the footwell can blow slowly - the fact that it's come and gone so many times would suggest that this probably isn't the problem, but it's easy to check.

The plugs into the ignition coil came loose and were shorting the electrical system out - lights going and it being quite so intermittent s suggest that this isn't your problewm either, but again it's easy to check.
