Does any one know what the visual differences are between the two?

My S2 is in for a new watrepump at the moment and the guy doing
it is finding that some of the pulmbing does not look right.

As the engine was changed before I bought the car I am getting paranoid that the wrong engine was fitted. Is there any sure fire way of spotting the difference?

Studog,

I haven't seen an S engine, but have an S2.

I'd have a trawl of the internet and look at some photos. I think they look quite different.

"Some of the plumbing doesn't look quite right" is a pretty vague description of anything. It could be that it wasn't plumbed in quite right, or the guy currenting doing the work doesn't know what he is looking at.

Besides, if the chap doing the work knows anything at all about 944's, he sould be able to tell the difference in a microsecond - even if they do look visually similar. (If nothing else, they drive quite differently - the S is much more revvy.)

It has always seemed fairly flat to me, not very revvy. Comes alive much better at around 4K
but generally not particularly quick. I think the tall gearing is fooling me. As my old car was 2.7 8v in an early (light) shell with the original short diff it alway felt fairly eager.

The comment about the cooling related to the water pump that is being replaced not having a plastic elbow on it to plumb to the header tank. The header tank was instead pumbed to the rad some how.

It is all a bit puzzling!

Surely the engine number will give the game away!

S2 lumps are genberally torquey, but wake up at around 4k. It therefore sounds like you are OK.

Bit of iffy plumbing? My bathroom is full of it!

Look for some photos, or find an owners meet. That'll clear it up for you.

Any one know where the engine number is on the block?

I think it is ok but I am just puzzled about the different parts fitted.
The sump is Ali depite all the contemporay articles talking about it being
plastic as a for instance!

The net yields nothing useful as the head and cam covers look the same. The factory workshop manual is no help either. It doesn't help that I haven't seen it for a
fortnight.

The engine number is ona little shelf, by the exhaust to number 4 cylinder. Worth readin, then posting here.

You wont want to know this, but I had a 2.5S once. When the cambelt snapped, I rebuilt it myself. Then we found out that the blck was from a 2.7, with the head from a 2.5S. Oh dear.....

944 S blocks are marked M44/40 ; Letter is either H (1987) or J (1988)

Specific visual features of a S engine are the intake manifold and the airbox.
