S3C bonnet question

Hi All ...

Hope someone might be able to shed some light on a problem I have just discovered.

Basically I have noticed a rattle comming from the front of my 1990 S3c and think I have located the problem down to the fact that there is some movement on the passenger side bonnet hinge / pivot.

If I grip the underside of the bonnet and lift there is about an inch to an inch and a halfs worth of movement which concerns me a little.

I am not sure whether the hinge is at fault or whether its the mount.

I have just spent a small fortune on having the radiator replaced and the exhaust down pipes so hope its not going to be too costly (


Also I am on the look out for a couple of new electric window motors if anyone knows of a good source ;o)

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated

sounds like something loose, either the long pivot bolt or the 2 plates that are sandwiched to the plywood divider.
Have a check before the bonnet drops off on one side !

Coincidentally, I noticed this on mine on Saturday. The hinge bolt had come loose. I tightened up the locknut and it was fine. 17mm socket and 17mm spanner and 5 minutes of your time.

If the bolt comes out, then the bonnet will drop down on that side. If you're lucky, the worst that will happen is that it will land on the top of the radiator bolts and put a seriously bad star craze in the bonnet.

If the wind gets under it, however, then star crazing might become the least of your worries as the bonnet flips backwards over your head and splatters in a million pieces against whoever is following you.

Tighten it up!

I used to have one of these in the early 90s and it was a bad bag of spanners then - I wouldnt dare have one now - they look like s**T

Reminds me of the joke about the odd job man looking for work , called at a house and was asked to paint the portch at the front of the house and given a can of emulsion and a brush. The same thing happened on my S3C (now minmax's) You will find that occasionally the bolts will loosen slightly.

If you have the bonnet up fully, it will be one (or maybe both) of the nuts that hold the hinge on the wood struts, vibration can shake them loose.

I think they are 17mm, the problem is easily cured by a spanner and a ratchet to tighten them up....makes a godawful rattle if I remember rightly.

A friend of my dad's has a 993 - on a classic our event, sitting on the line at Prescott, he dropped teh clutch and a rod went through the side of the block - 46k miles and 6 years old - £11k for a recon motor or 16 for a new one - yep build quality to spare and cheap to run
