I have been thinking about my brakes lately and I am starting to think they are not up to scratch. The front pads and discs were brand new when I bought the car but they have never felt very confidence inspiring (considering they are quite big and vented). I had a look at them lately and I think the discs atleast look extremely smooth and shiny so I am wondering if my pads and discs have not been bedded in properly and they have glazed up?

Below is the best pic I could get. I will be removing the pads tomorrow but I just wanted comments or ideas. Do they look normal? If they don't will rubbing them down with some sandpaper do the trick?

They are supposed to be smooth and shiny, but it is hard to tell just from looking at them whether they have been bedded in properly, and this does make a big difference to the performance. I would advise against the sandpaper trick, but if you do it you need to use the correct garnet paper not ordinary sandpaper, as the aluminium oxide used on normal sandpaper will contaminate the iron disc. Sometimes if the pads are starting to glaze over they can be recovered by going through the bedding in procedure again, in more extreme cases it can help to fit a set of 'semi-metallic' pads and give the brakes a good pasting to clean the surface deposits before going through the bedding-in procedure again with the normal pads.

They look fine to me, but if your taking the pads out anyway I'd put a new set in for the sake of a few pounds.

Thanks

I will try bedding them in properly and if they still leave a lot to be desired it might be a good excuse for some fast road pads
