To Throttle Pot or not To Throttle Pot

Hello all,
The car decided a new game was in order this evening - basically lowering the idle speed to about 500 revs (ie: not enough to keep turning the engine) - the rest of the rev range seems largely okay and I was able to rag it most of the way home with a wee bit of handbrake braking to keep the engine running at the lights.
When I got home - I disconnected the throttle pot and now get a much more respectable 1200 rpm. So the question is - would anyone think that this was proof of it being a throttle pot problem - or could disconnecting it merely be masking a different problem ?

Hi, I had the same problem where the Throttle pot was sending the wrong output to the ECU making it believe that the throttle was fully open. This caused the engine to run very rich. Symptoms low revs and engine cuts out. Can you smell petrol and are you using loads of fuel these are the things I noticed. The garage replaced 4 throttle pots before it was fixed. In the end they worked out that the throttle spindle was very slightly to long for the pot and this was causing the failure. In the end they put a rubber washer between throttle pot and throttle body and hey presto it's been great ever since.

Just put a new throttle pot on mine and it is all OK,it is worth noting that Ford have now put a mod' in,when I bought the pot I was told I needed a new small (3" section of Loom to fit it,when I got it home and on the vehicle I realised the new loom had the same connector as mine so I took it back for a £9 refund,it turns out the mod' is gold plated contact terminals on the pot and connecting loom,This would lead me to beleive that the older "tinned" terminals were not upto the job (if they were ,Ford wouldn't have done the mod).................Anyway where im going is how many of us have put on new pots when all we needed to do is get a good connection on the old one???? We'll never know,but check the connections it may save you £62.00
