Good/Bad Associated Sponsorship
Discussion
On the back of Volvo being spotted as one of Jaguar's F1 sponsors
what are the most inappropriate sponsorship tie ins, or the best.....
The best I've seen was the Adult Channel sponsoring a bike or 2 in one of the SuperBike support races, lets just say they took hospitality to a whole new level

The season after I finished with them unfortunately but my old Superbike sponsors picked up Club International as a banner sponsor on RSV Aprillia's. They used to have "boxes"
at all the meetings and at least two birds in the Garage draped all over the bikes. They would then go up and down the Garages touting Polaroids with the other riders, a fiver for a lils shot and a tenner if Jack & Danny wanted oh and a little Girl on Girl action drapped across the petrol tank was by negotiation
It caused a bit of a stir before the ACU got involved and banned the birds from the pits and then another two meets before Club withdrew their sponsorship by mutual agreement, basically it was a bit of a giggle to start with but they soon became a pain in the arse. The Daily Star were also sponsoring at the same time and were great they'd do a quick photoshoot before practise then bugger off and leave the team to it.

So bizarre, it almost can't be true, but I am told it is:
Imola 1994, the Pacific Grand Prix team had representatives of a potential new title sponsor with them. All was going well, and it looked likely that the team were going to get their financial lifeline. Then Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna were both killed. They didn't even bother asking the sponsors if they were still interested. Why?
The sponsors were (get this)...
Black Death Cigarettes

Yep, it is true... and the cars were to be painted black, with a skull and crossbones on them too. IIRC Ratzenburger raced for Simtek, and although there was no direct association, the tobacco company involved thought it was in bad taste... and the Senna died in the race.
