Mac Rumours http://buyersguide.macrumors.com is probably the best souce.

Even people who sell and service them are kept in the dark.

Just seen on your profile that you're a Photographer.

I would wait until the software you use has been specifically written for the Intel Chipset.

Photoshop won't be don't until Adobe release CS3.

Have seen quite a few Intel MacBook Pros in for repair already.

yup i know, im not planning on upgrading until end of this year at the earliest, but I am curious and impatient!

my g5 was one of the first ones into the country and it is showing its age a bit now.

Those quad G5s with a load of RAM in are still pretty fast.

Think Adobe are making a mistake by not converting their software sooner.

Very disappointing how they perform www.barefeats.com/rosetta.html

Quad core 3.8GHz if I'm sticking my neck out.

I bought an iPod Mini two days before they released the Nano, and prepared a presentation on the PowerBooks and iMac G5s the morning before they were replaced that evening.

You can pretty much guarantee it won't be whatever I guess.

I agree about Adobe making a mistake in not upgrading sooner. Hopefully they will reconsider if they see Quark 7 sales increase.

Don't like the sound of that... as I have just ordered a 17". I've ordered it after seeing my mates MacBook 15". I'll stick to the G5 for PS work so that won't be an issue. My main app is Capture One, which on my G5 takes about 18 secs to load, on a MacBook, it's virtually instant and naviagting between pictures is very quick and instant... as is the rest of the OS... impressive.

I can wait for the desktops, by which time someone will hopefully figured out how to run Classic, which i still need for one app.

Dual Dual-Core Conroe CPUs at whatever speed Intel manage to crank them out are pretty much guaranteed. Probably looking at late Q3 or Q4 this year at the earliest. What will be more interesting is the enclosure. So far Apple have kept very similar enclosure for their Intel based products. But the existing PowerMac enclosure, whilst being very clever, is not very space efficient. I expect a smaller case capable of holding 4 internal hard drives possibly with factory setup RAID. Will we see dual PCIe-16x slots? Even without SLI or crossfire this would be very appealing to people wanting 4 screens...

No, hadn't see that, very interesting.

Apple pay their service providers on a Tier system for how difficult a particular repair is. G5s are a real pain to work on, they're awkward due to their size, and can be difficult to diagnose.

The iMac moved towards end user repairs, and I would expect the G5s replacement to have ease of repairs considered in the design.

We used to see a lot of portables in for repair, but they provided the majority of Apple's sales, so not surprising. Was very rare to see a G5 in, so says something for them.

Apple are statisically the most reliable though.

yes, i would agree on the enclosures - two HD bays on a workstation is a poor show, as in no motherboard raid. G5s do look good though

If you're not willing to wait, or you don't expect Adobe to get CS in universal by the time you need the box, then the Quad G5 still rocks. Top tip - order with the 7800 graphics card, they ship as standard with 6600s and they're crap. And you can't upgrade as Apple won't sell a better card

I've got a Quad and the new Powermac (Mac Pro??) will have to be bloody good to make me even think about upgrading at the mo. Given my experience with the MBP and the MB, Apple's quality appears to be slipping a tad so I'll definitely not be a rev-A guinea pig for the really expensive boxes, however much I love their gear...

im not in a hurry to upgrade, so may well wait fro the Rev B powermacs. How long does it usually take for the second rev to come about?

maybe I will wait until they are shipping with dual quadcore woodcrests in Q2 next year?
