Hiya all,
Been messing around with PSP this morning, working on an old pie on the beach photo, and I set out to do this... (black and white background with colour object)

however, I accidently done this

I thought I knew how I did it, but I cannot for the life of me do it again, can anyone tell me how I did it?
I stupidly saved it as a jpeg instead of a psp file and now cannot backtrack- or can i?

At the mo I can get as far as getting the two layers, with the object on one layer and whole picture on another- thought I then did an adjustment layer and then clicked monochrome- but its not happening. Anyone know how I did it, and how I can do it again?
TIA

btw does anyone know whose car it is? its a beautiful colour

The car belonged to the Fishes.

Make the upper layer the adjustment layer for saturation, and then draw a bit on it in black/grey/white?

thanks bodo but that went totally over my head, I'm a psp dummy, even the PSP for dummies is too hard for me to understand

the upper layer is the car, is that right? I want that colour and the rest B&W.. i'll have another play

I'm not a PSP user either, but the principals are similar to other applications. The car should be on the bottom layer, and the top layer should be the transparent adjustment layer.

Ok, I understood that, and did that and it was the same effect, but I know for sure that wasnt how I did it before I've started making notes on when I do things what I have done

Cheers bodo

ps another Q, so if I have a red car in the background (eg), far off in the distance and want the car red and the rest B&W, do I have to highlight the surroundings rather than the car to separate it?

You can either draw where you want b/w, or fill the adjustment layer and then erase highlights with a sponge brush

PSP X has a pretty good B&W effect - it also mimics different coloured filters.

Personally, I would make a seleaction around the car you want kept in colour and promote that to a new layer, then make the lower layer greyscale (set saturation to 0). To get decent blending, make the selection as accurate as you can, but don't turn on anti-aliasing or feathering. Once you've selected the car, go to "edit selection" and apply a small amount of gaussian blur - enough to just soften the edge of the selection. Then promote it to a new layer. Don't forget to unselect before making the bottom layer greyscale...

Here's a quick and dirty picture done using that technique:

Easiest way to do the spot colour thing in PSP is:

1) Select the thing you want in colour - use the "edge seeking" selection tool

2) Copy the selection

3) Paste the selection as new layer

4) Make this new layer invisible (not essential, just a bit easier) - click on the eye next to the layer select bar thing on the right hand side of the screen

5) Select the original layer (double click on the appropriate layer bar, bit as you did in the last step)

6) Choose "select none"

7) Image - adjust - channel mixer - output as monochrome (check box)

This will change the original layer to a B&W image

8) Make the colour selection layer visible again (click on the eye again)

9) Select this layer to work on

10) Use the move tool to line it up on the B&W layer.

Voila

Job done!!

That's the way I do it anyway...

Hope that helps

My crude but effective method:-

Open picture
Desaturate using your preffered method
History brush to paint colour back in
"Save As"...just ad "spot colour" or similar on the original file name.

1) Load in the image
2) Duplicate the layer
3) Desaturate the top layer
4) Use the eraser to erase the parts you want to show through coloured

maybe it is lack of understanding, but I must be using a totally different version to what you all have. (jasc psp8)

chrismapey, I can get to the point where I make it B&W- for some reason it makes a new adjustment layer and its all black, but background stays colour

zad, cannot find how to desaturate?

someone else said set saturation to 0, it appears to be 0 already and its still in colour?

anyway, I can do it- the way bodo suggested aith a transparent layer, but would be nice to nderstand how I am doing it and other ways.

In PSP8, desaturate is Image/Greyscale. But it's best to use 'Channel Mixer' (Adjust/Color Balance/Channel Mixer) to turn it B&W.

You aren't changing layers.

Once you have your selection, you need to tell PSP to work on the original (background) layer, by clicking on the bar on the right.

Then tell it to select none.

Turn this layer B&W, by using the channel mixer.

Bob's your uncle.

Feel free to PM me for my phone number.

I'm quite happy to have a chat to you and talk you through it step by step once I have PSP open in front of me. (Tonight, as I don't have PSP installed on my work laptop)
