I posted last night in GG, but the first (and only) reply suggested moving it ...

.... so, it was my birfday yesterday, and later today I'm being taken out to pick my present. The-Future-Missus-D wants to get me a palm pilot. Her brother in law just got a Treo (or something simliar) and she thinks I'd love it.

That said, I don't want to have a big clunky phone, especially as I'll probably end up damaging it on site somewhere.

What I'd much rather have is something that I can use for all the normal things I use my diary/laptop for and just transfer stuff to my computer at the end of the day or week.

So ... what do you informed folks suggest is good? (By the way, I'd like to have sat nav in it too, if possible).

Doubtless you'll get a lot of "I've got a xxxxx and it's bleeding marvellous", but I'm afraid I'm going rain on your parade a little; IME handhelds are crap. All of them. I've owned assorted Palm Pilots, Psions & I'm looking at a dust covered iPaq 5550 right now. I'd have a handheld if I could pick features from each one; the battery life & Name & Address and Diary apps from the Psion 5MX, the size of the Palm Pilot, the colour screen of the iPaq. But all of them have fatal flaws that don't justify the effort of carrying them round - and the second time you switch one on to find its battery has gone flat or it's crashed & you can't give someone a phone number you know you have, you'll chuck it in a drawer and never use it again.

I've gone back to the Psion 5MX, despite their fragility and crap screen, because the batteries last forever and the PIM apps are the very best I've ever used anywhere. But I'd love my "ideal" handheld - I suppose one will get built one day.

For everyone who's really happy with theirs, you'l find someone who never gets more than a few days pleasure at a time then chucks it in a drawer... Palms seem more reliable than CE based ones but don't have the 'windows-ness' that people like...

slightly o/t: My dad's still using a Psion Organiser II on a day to day basis!!

I really can't fault Blackberries. If all you want it to wander around with a copy of Outlook with a battery that lasts for a few days, then they're great. A little limited on features other than that though. We use XDA 2s at work, and i've not heard much bad about them, also very impresed with the XDA mini S.

Thank you, folks.

After browsing online, this is the one I think I like best:

www.totalpda.co.uk/Palm-TE2-with-GPS-Navigation-companion.aspx

alternatively, it comes with 'Tom Tom'.

Any comments? Good or bad... or warnings.

Thanks
