I seem to have some form of Malware of virus on my machine which modifies all the zip & RAR files in one of my drives.
It adds "updated-fixed 05-2006" to the file name and inserts a setup.exe and _trash.tmp file int othe archive. It doesn't seem to do anything more malicious but I would like to getrid of the bloody thing.
So far it doesn't show up with Norton Anti-V or Ad-Aware or MS Defender. I tried ot do a system restore but it kept being rejected!

Anyone had a similar problem and how did they get rid of it.

Cheers.

Try the online scans from Trend Micro, Symantec etc. Once you can identify it, Google the name for removal instructions.

Thanks Peter,

I have now tried online scans by Norton, Trend Micro and McAfee, I have Spy Docto, Microsoft defender and Norton Internet Security 2006 all running and nothing is detecting anything untoward, but the files are still being changed in that one directory.

Can anyone give me any more clues as to what I should be looking for and where to look please?

Even archives that i have deleted the setup.exe and _trash.tmp files from are being re-modified after closing the window.

Have you downloaded AVG? One of the better virus scanners, and its free.

It often finds viruses that Norton etc misses.

To be fair, everything often finds viruses that Norton have missed!

Thanks Jimothy, It found a "Downloader.Generic.XHX" trojan virus embedded in a file in a .rar archive. Hopefully this is the little bugger that has been changing things. Will od a full scan in safe mode tonight.
