2006 Mile Miglia
Discussion
Just got back from the 2006 Mile Miglia. This is race from Brescia to Rome & back again over a 3 day period for all models of cars which participated in the orginal race between 1930 & 1957. The atmosphere was fantasic as were the cars. I counted 3 Jaguar "C" types, 2 Jaguar "D" types, 20 BMW´s of various vintages, uncountable Bentleys & about 10 Mercedes "Gullwings" together with innumerable Ferrari´s & other Italian makes.Last Thursday was registration day in Brescia for the drivers & 400 cars & it was an unforgetable sight to see them lined up higgedly piggly waiting for the process to start. Intentional or not it was possible to walk amongst the cars, talk to the drivers & or navigators & generally soak up the atmosphere. A lot of the cars (particularly Bentleys), despite British number plates, were German owned & I gather it is a matter of prestige to retain the original numbers. At 2000 hours the race commenced & to see & hear the cars race on public roads along Lake Garda, supported by thousands of Italians, with temperatures in the mid 20´s was quite something.
I was, however disappointed at the total absence of any Classic Cars from the UK. The Germans & to a lesser extent the Dutch, were very much in evidence (often driving MG´s& Triumphs)& since the race is on public roads its possible for ordinery mortals to join in for as long or as short a period as they wish. But not apparently the British, which is a pity, since Sterling Moss still holds the record for the fastest race completed. Incidently the place to stay is Sirmione on Lake Garda about 30 miles from Brescia where some of the race participants also stayed (you could them testing there engines!). In summary a very interesting but expensive 4 days!
