Carrera 3.2 needs a clutch

I am buying a 1988 3.2 Carrera LHD and before going to look at it the owner told me that it needed a clutch. The car seems in great condition otherwise so having negotiated a good lump off to allow for the clutch the owner has agreed to trailer the car to a specialist of my choosing to get the job done. I am in the North West so am thinking of Ninemeister, Hartech or Unit 11. Can anyone give me any recommendations as I have never used any of them before?

I recently had a service done on my 3.2 at Lodge, they did a good job, were reasonable and friendly.

Personally I think were a bit too far away but if you get stuck let us know we are on the East coast. cost would be circa £600.

Wherever you go make sure you feel confident and they give you a firm estimate/quote. But don't be too shocked if it goes up slightly, they may find things that are better to replace while your up in there while doing the clutch.

What I want is someone who will give an honest appraisal of what else needs doing as my biggest worry is once they get in there things can get expensive! I would also like them to give me a run down of what if anything else needs looking at on the car as I'm planning to take it to Le Mans.

To be honest unless the car has had a very hard life there isn't too much that could be wrong, you shouldn't have any probs with flywheel, you've driven the car I assume so you should be aware the gearbox is ok, maybe the starter motor connections could be grotty, but thats not worthy a change, provided its working correctly, so provided there are no leaks from engine or gearbox seals, or clutch slave cylinder. And assuming engine and box come out without breaking anything, and the gearbox to engine bolts aren't seized (unlikely) not much can go wrong.

They may discover that a cv boot or 2 need replacing but thats not a great stress.

what guarantee have you that the G50 in this car is sound ?
As far as what can go wrong, how about.....
the main oil seal may need replacing, even if it doesn't, replace it anyway.
Same as the driveshaft boots.
Is the flywheel ok ? This cannot be skimmed, as a datum point is taken off the gbox.
Get the oil changed in the box at the same time.
Is there any debris in the oil ?
What s the transaxle like ?
My advice is, get the owner to repair it, and pay him.

wildoliver - thanks for the reassurance!
After talking to John Holland today and him taking the time to talk me through why they wear and sound as they do when worn I feel less stressed about it. We discussed what else might need doing and he is going to give the car the equivalent of a pre purchase inspection so I know its condition. There are no signs otherwise that the car has been abused. It has good service history and plenty of bills and the current owner is a real enthusiast and has kept on top of most things. He stored the car over winter and admits he had been nursing the clutch before that.

Stuttgartmetal - all fair points but I have no more guarantee than any other private sale car I've ever bought. I drove the car, the gearbox seemed fine, certainly as good as any others I have tried. I got money off to cover twice the cost of a clutch so as with any car purchase, there is an element of trust and judgement !
