Got the loan of a brand new C4S for the weekend. It is the best all round road car I've ever driven. It drives like a 2wd and nods it's nose like a C2 without any hint of the extra weight in the front. Obviously, it would be more compromised than a C2 on the circuit but in all weathers on UK roads it is a brilliant car. The 911 is truly an amazing marque. In one guise or another it offers everything that any driver could ask for.

I'm sure that the experts on here will argue that the C4S does understeer a bit more as it is slightly more nose heavy, but for me (and my limited riving skills) and for the UK weather, it meets my needs exactly.
It really is such a complete car.,

How does it compare to the 996 C4S ? I had one of those from new, and was quite disappointed with the way that it felt after my C2.
I felt that the C4S felt quite heavy and felt wooden compared the the C2. I thought that the steering lacked the life of the C2. Is that the impression that you got? The 997 feels much lighter at the nose and the steering has more feedback. Also the front drive element of 996 felt more pronounced, like it was pulling you out of the corner once you reach the apex rather than the classic 911 'punch'. Basically the 997 feels much more like a front wheel drive car. I dont have the figures but I would guess that the power split has more of a rear bias in the 997. what amazed me was how stable the car was once you turned in. No need to wait for the car to settle. PASM was pretty good but I would much prefer a passive set up.

This seems pretty contradictory (or is there a typo in your post above?).
I think on the 997 C4S, the torque split is anywhere between 5%/95% front/rear (default?) and 40%/60% in extreme conditions. that being the case, 5%/95% is pretty close to rear-wheel drive.

steve rance said:Steve - exactly..... I came from a fairly 'sporty' C2 with recaros..... The C4S felt very underwhelming in comparison - No edge to it, it felt heavy and a little boring to be honest - I kept it 6 months, then chopped it in for a GT2 (that's more like it...) - I sold the 4S to KayC, that's probably why he's always got the Arse....!

Without doubt my C4S is the best car I've ever owned. No idle boast when you see the extensive list of cars I've owned before this one..........

Vauxhall Corsa 1.5TD LS
hmmm, though I reckon you'd say the same if you drove a C2S or even a C2, no?

Two points to note:
1) I have driven a C2S
2) The comment above was somewhat tongue in cheek - as good as my previous cars were (and I can honestly say that in their own ways they all did the job I wanted from them) I can't really say that the fact that the C4S is the best car I've ever owned is surprising!
Having said that, each to their own, but I'm sure I made the right decision (for me) - when the weather gets really bad, I'm expecting to be even happier I went 4-wheel drive not two-wheel drive.....

If you can honestly tell me you truely notice the 4wd coming into action in normal road use I'll be surprised.
I owned a 997C2S and have driven a C4S extensively. If you're talking everyday, day in day out, use IMO the 4S is the better car. In fact I'm not sure I can think of anything that competes, frankly. Contrary to popular assumption it actually bites harder on turn in than the C2 - probably due to a little extra weight over the front - and extra drive of course. In the wet the difference is even more noticable. Mind you if day to day use includes regular trips to the 'Ring etc. then it's got to be a GT3 of some description hasn't it - which is why I recently got an RS and am also looking forward to the end of Aug. when my new GT3 arrives. Wonder if that really will double up as a road and track car as they promise?
