It has a different map (in fact it holds a set of maps), held on an EPROM inside the unit. If it is just the Lucas 14CUX ECU that has failed, the chances are that the EPROM is still intact and could be removed from the faulty unit and installed in the replacement.
If you find a replacement, check the Lucas part number on it against the original. It will be five numbers followed by a letter with a symbol similar to the Mercedes-Benz star in front of it.

They're normally soldered in. However, it's not too hard to un-solder them and either solder them into the new ECU or (far better) fit a socket, and solder the chip into a riser that plugs into the socket. This also means that if/when you decide to get it remapped, the fiddly bit of the job has already been done.
Hmmm, I thought all TVR's had and EPROM socket, obviously not!
There are various people who can fit one eg RPi www.rpiv8.com/carbs-2.htm#chipping
