993 Dashboard Computer
Discussion
I took my 993 into the local hand car wash on saturday. You know the sort of place, ex petrol forecourt now taken over my Lithuanian assylum seekers armed to the teeth with knocked-off Karcher hardware.
Anyway, when I drive out my on dash computer, which I usually have set to give a digital mph reading, had packed up. It had not switched off completely, but showed a row of little squares that I think were the lower half of the figure 8. Pressing the control stalk in all directions had no effect on the readout at all. And when i got home and turned the ignition off, the digits continued to be illuminated, even staying on after I locked the car. Turning the ignition on and off also had no effect on the display.
Came back half hour later to try again, and found that the display had at last turned of. Unfortunately it remains off when I turn the ignition or start the car.
As it was working perfectly as I pulled into the car wash ghetto, but was malfunctioning on me exit, I'm drawing the conclusion that is suffering from a Moldovan Soaking.
Anybody got any idea if water in the works could cause this. And if so, is there a remedy.
Two of my mates take their 993's to this same crew and have never mentioned any ill effects to their electics so I may be jumping to conclusions, but it would be an unlikely coincidence if the computer just happened to fail while I was there.

You can't. (I'm assuming you have a LHD car?)
Only option is to switch the tacho for one from a UK car - though obviously it has to have the computer
I have a RHD 993turbo. On my RHD Boxster S I could switch the digital display between MPH and KMH. If there was a way to do this on a RHD 993 (turbo in my case) it would be great

You can't switch. It is either a KPH read out or a MPH readout, as was said above you will need to swap the tacho for a RHD drive one
Well, A993lad said in his original post:
"Anyway, when I drive out my on dash computer, which I usually have set to give a digital mph reading, had packed up."
This indicates that it can be switched. What happens if you select the speed reading on the computer and then push the stalk back to "reset" the value? Haven't tried that and I'm not with my car at the moment. Normally this would reset things such as avg mpg etc to zero.
I thought the whole point of digital was for functions such as this

I meant I had it set to read mph as opposed to the other computer options (average fuel consumption, average speed, temp etc). I don't think you can get kph instead of mph or vice versa.
Anyway, latest development is that the compter readout is now working as it should. I'm convinced that they sprayed their jet wash hose somewhere and got water in one of the conncetions that feeds the computer. Now it's dried out everything is working again. Does anyone know if this is feasible?
Presumably there are a whole bunch of senders around the car that provide the info you can call up. If the connection on one of these got water in it could it send the readout haywire?

Basically, you don't. The tachs with built-in OBC's have different part numbers depending on the units of measure used in the car's country of sale. And the large fuel tank available in LHD continental cars also gets a unique part number, presumably to calculate the distance to empty.

So the OBC packed up in my 993, and then started working again (see above).
The general consensus in the replies was that the OBC display screen was faulty.
And sure enough it packed up again a few weeks later, and didn't come back on, so I started trying to source a replacement tacho with obc.
But bizarrely it has started working again and seems fine.
And the thing that links both occasions it has failed is - water. The first time it packed up was when I took it into a car wash - it worked fine as I drove in but was faulty as I drove out. The second time it packed up I was driving through a pretty heavy rainstorm on the A1.
After both failures, it has "fixed itself" after a prolonged period of dry warm weather.
This suggests to me that water is getting into a connection somewhere.
Does anyone know where the sensors are for this?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
