Bouncing Petrol Guage

Once I have less than half a tank of petrol left the needle flicks between empty and half way, with the warning light flashing on and off ...... anyone else have the same problem or know how to fix it ?

(asuming that is, it does it on corners as the petrol slops round the tank)

Mine never shows fully full even when you can see it's going to come up out of the filler. Doesn't go below a quarter either. I just watch the miles, fill up at half full or just stop at every Shell station I see!
