I have recently become the very proud owner of a 944 S2 and am coming under a lot of pressure from three mates (2 Boxters and 1 Cayman) to improve the performance on my lesser performing but more characterful 944. People have mentioned chipping but this cant be very good for the car can it? What about a better exhaust? Don't want to change it about much really as if this was how Porsche meant it to be then this must be pretty good. Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Chris

Exhaust won't do much, maybe make it sound better. Ditto an induction kit. You might get about 5% more power from an off-the-shelf chip, or a bit more from a proper rolling road session and chip re-burn. Assuming a K26 turbocharger is not on the agenda, then your only other option is to upgrade the brakes/dampers, etc. You won't be as quick in a straight line, but you'll murder them on the twisty bits.

And don't pay any attention to your Boxster/Cayman driving friends. Just tell them they have a gay/hairdressers car. That should do the trick...

Finally, you might want to consider some driver training, which is the single biggest performance gain you can make on any car. And you can take it with you to your next car!

Ditto the driver training...twice in fact!

And you're getting grief from Boxster owners?? Ohh-kayy... whatevvva! The Cayman driver has a point but at the end of the day when it comes to smiles per £ I bet you're still laughing all the way to the bank!

The engine was the last place I went to improve mine, are you tracking the car? if you are I'd look at suspension, start with the ARB's and then investigate upgrades, change your brake fluid and pads. ATE racing blue fluid and mintexx 144/55 pads are a good match.

But it all depends on what you want from the car, and how you are using it.

The S2 should be quicker than a Boxster, and not far short of an S in my (trackday) experience.
If you looking for more power,Promax do a kit that includes cat bypass pipe, chip, and air filter. They claim an extra 25-35 bhp depending on engine condition etc.Iirc it's around £400 exc fitting. I'm considering getting one, in time for a trip to the 'ring in July. Any S2 owners have it?

I was in my independent this afternoon for an MOT, there were 2 Boxsters - both with RMS leaks, one had only been replaced 10k ago. Count yourself lucky

Good to hear the news re Boxters! I shall pass on the gay/hairdresser bit to him. The full kit sounds good but I am rather more interested in not killing myself by being a bad driver in a souped up Porsche. Any reccomendations for driver training? Regards

Andy Walsh at CarLimits.com is excellent and good value for money. I learned a huge amount from the 2 days I did with him.

Andy walsh is a top bloke to train with.

You could also try Don Palmer and also this lot...

Again its all down to where you are going to drive it quickly.

Errmmmm, I won't want to be saying something that I (and Ted) may regret, but there has been a load of controversy recently on the Titanic mailing list about the Promax kit.

I have no first hand experience of it, but from what others have said, I'm not going to be rushing up there with the first £400 or so I can lay my hands on.

If you want to spend money, you have an excellent base.

Suspension and brakes would be the first port of call. Promax chip eg off the shelf, will increase the rev limiter, smooth out the power delivery and maybe give you 5bhp. If you want to go down that route go to the likes of 9M for a proper rolling road ECU rewrite which will be bespoke for the car.

More pricey options would be getting the head re-ported or my personal favourite, drop a supercharger in. I believe that 9M have developed a kit especially for the 944.

But the best piece of advice is driver training, the 944 is very easy to drive but a bit of extra tuition will make you a quicker and better driver.

Just remind your mates that your car will not lose value like theirs and enjoy it for what it is - great fun for your money (alot less than they forked out)!
