Sport photos – tips needed for friends match at Portman Rd.
Discussion
I’m going along to a special match afternoon at Portman Road (Ipswich Town FC) to take photos for my mate (Muncher) who is playing there.
I have a D70 with 18-70 and 70-300 lenses. I am a bit of a novice; the fancy camera is really for work use.
Paul wants me to take photos of them playing – so I will be using the 70-300 to get shots of the players from the side of the pitch.
What settings should I use? Generally all I use is the Auto mode, but I would like to try out some alternatives to get better results (if possible).
Should I use a tripod?
Any tips gratefully received!

I guess it's a f5.6 lens? It may not be enough but aperture priority and wide open would be the best to throw the background out of focus. And definitely no tripod, but be prepared to use high ISO to get fast enough shutter speed. (It should be ok as it's in the afternoon but you never know!) Good luck!
EDIT: It would also be a good idea to have a second body with wide lens attached for shots when the players are near you.

I use a d100 and a 70-300ed lens for taking pictures at football matches, I would recommend a monopod & to shoot from the end of the pitch if possible as that's where you are most likely to get clear shots, if you are only looking to get pictures of one person then just move to the other end at half time, if you are looking to get a better range of people then move every now and then.
Try to get the ball in the shot as much as possible I find about 1/350" is enough to freeze the people but give the ball a bit of blur.
If you want clear pictures of the goalie diving I find catching them in the warm up is the best way.
If you want clear pictures of the players diving you might be better off at Stamford bridge .

Hi Sam
Having a D70 - I'd use "A", and set the aperture on the 70-300 to the widest (f5.6)
The camera will then adjust the shutter speed to compensate.
Set the ISO (equivalent of film speed) to between 200 - 400 depending on how overcast the day is (higher numbers for a greyer day) - I'd advise caution going too much higher than 800, as you will get noise in the pictures.
Hope all goes well - if you and Paul fancy a coffee after, you know our office address on Martlesham Heath
HTH, feel free to call if you need any more advice.
Chris
