Hi,

I've owned my 95 4.0 chim for about 2 months now and after 36,000 miles its due a 12k service. I'm using Offords as they are the closest at a sensible price (£360).

I am fully aware that that is not going to be the only cost but no one seems to be giving me any idea as to what else there could be. What are other peoples' experiences of a service of this type. I'm just after some idea.

Thanks

Will

Depends on the condition of your car. If its had regular fettling then you could get away with just the service. If not, the sky's the limit i'm afraid!

Popular problem areas include;

Dampers
Rusty chassis
Steering rack
Clutch hydraulics
Wobbly bonnet
Exhaust manifolds
Differential
Camshaft
Various sensor failures
Radiators

Many of the above, you would probably already have had an idea about before the service, so fingers crossed, you may be ok!!

Thanks. The bite on my clutch is very high. Is that a sign it's on the way out?

I also get a 'flat spot' at about 3000rpm. Is that a camshaft on the way out?

I'll add Engine mounts to the list (mine were shot and this gave me a flat spot around 3000rpm)
Also ask them for a couple of spare 100Amp fuses

Thanks. How much did the engine mounts (fitted) set you back?

Walldenway (nr Maidstone) supplied and fitted mine for less than £200 recently. Very happy with their service too

Many people are lucky enough to get away with just the service, unfortunately I don't seem to be one of them. My first 12 last year was circa £800, a 6k service in October was about £1200 and my last 12k a couple of months ago was £500ish.
If you take a look at the cost breakdown in my profile it may help to give an idea as to what else was picked up.

Yes and no IMHO..... It is a lot of money but if doing it myself I'd have to be on my back for hours/days under a car held up by just a couple of axle stands on a very narrow drive between 2 houses. The time and mess mean't I preferred to get someone to do it for me, Austec strip everything down, prime it and wax-oil it hence the price compared to some other places who just liberally spray wax over everything without the strip down first of all.

Crikey!! Could it really be that?! It just feels a bit flat between 2900 and about 3100rpm then picks up fine. Almost feels like a turbo.

I have no mechanical knowledge so please help! Should I drive the car over the weekend? Its due in on monday.

Still

Mine did the swirl tank a couple of years ago (Mounts now a service item for me) but i don't see why that give a problem @ 3000 only??

36,000 mile service

They have to:
- Change the cambelts
- Service the turbo unit
- Replace the 4WD controller
- Check for body rust

A wee joke methinks.

With regards to the confusion I have rained upon Seasider and co - the flat spot occurred at 3000 and was very unpredictable above that. In fact I was loath to take it above 4000 - so in hindsight I've missled you.

I should have said 'At 3000 it flattens out, and I was too scared to take it any further'

If you have a flat spot at 3000 but it then gets better - then it'll be something else.

All understood. Thanks.

Could it be the camshaft?
