Ted,

If there's one thing that has caused me to abandon sites in the past it's those bloody odd-shaped "find the close button and not click the ad" adverts that appear right in the middle of an article. I dunno why they just annoy the heck out of me, I mean, I've gone so far as to remove flash in the past, that it itself can be a ball-aching task with registry patches and what not to stop it constantly wanting to reinstall.

I really do understand the need to maximuse revenue for your site but surely there are plenty of other adverts already on the site without the need for those as well? Does anyone feel the same? I just find it so ignorant of the advertiser for starters, and the they are so sly about it, the old tricks of desperately trying to trick you into a click.

Awww I'm just so disappointed it seems all sites go this way eventually, the reader becomes nothing more than a potentional click rather than a valued member. Please, any other adverts, just not those popup in the middle types otherwise I will just stop reading any PH articles. I know that sounds a bit rude I really don't mean it that way it just I simply cannot stand to see them, they put me in a bad mood! I feel like a sheep behing herded.

Anyway it's your site to do with as you please I just think it's a bad move, I would honestly rather pay a premium fee if it came to that to not see any adverts. I enjoy your daily news and forums and yes...please put up a pay option if that's at all possible.

Regards,
Alan

I think that Pistonheads is better than most from this point of view. The pop up ads should only appear once a visit to my knowledge. I usually just get the ad once and not again unless I close my browser session. Maybe you have a setting which prevents cookies from saving so it can't tell if you've been here before. I do understand what you mean though. Some sites do drive you totally mad with their advertising.

I agree, though this should probably be in Website Feedback rather than General Gassing... I spend enough time on this site to justify paying a subscription fee. However it's all about economics - if the intrusive and annoying adverts pay Ted enough that and equivalent income through subscriptions would discourage membership (through a high subscription fee), then it may not be worth it.

Awaiting move by mods!

Nope this doesn't work, yesterday I got the popup ad 5 times in a row on every forum page refresh. I'm not sure if Ted has all architectures and browsers to test the site on, but I can assure you that the 'once a visit' thing doesn't work on Mac OS X, on any browser (and I use plenty)

I have to agree. I don't know how much more ted gets for the 'pop up in the middle of the window' adds but I detest them. I could tolerate far more banners if it is the only other option.

I think it's great as it is, the pop ups arn't frequent enough (well for me at least) to be annoying at all and they disappear as soon as you click on something on the site unlike many others.

Yeah I could do the same thing, but some of the other forums I subscribe to have strict anti-ad-blocking policies as that's the poor forum owner's only source of income

Besides, all my Macs are now fast enough not to bog down with shit loads of Flash crap....

I wasn't even aware I was blocking something. Safari is set to block any pop-ups as standard, doesn't work for those annoying Flash ones though.

Happy to pay my way

yeah, but not your classic window ones, those flash based ones. I really hate Flash for that, I wish you could disable it per site, is that possible?

I take your point and sympathise about the multiple popups - it's no wonder you're irritated by that. I will follow that up with the company serving the ads.

I turn down numerous pop up campaigns because I am aware of the irritation factor. I've also withdrawn campaigns in the past where the close buttons have been unclear (dosh I thought would be in the bank, but ultimately I've got to keep people happy rather than just take the money and run ).

I will only accept popups for motoring related campaigns. The Dunlop one I think is good. It couldn't be more relavent and it's far less intrusive than asking for subscriptions etc.

I'll go talk to someone about the multiple instances.

Never come across a Flash one on here. I tend to avoid sites that use them.

Content is king, that's why PistonHeads rules.
