Starter motor

I think the starter motors going in the car, its been steadly getting worse over the last month, sometimes it works first time nae bother hot and cold and other times its just a whirring noise. Ive only had the car 2 months and got a 6 month warrenty when i bought it so will it be covered under that? If its not then is it better to buy a new one or just get the old one refurbished? Prices?

Has anybody got a guide how to remove the old one and fit the new one?? Is it an easy job? bearing in mind iam not even sure what it looks like lol

Has anyone kept their old starter? I'm just curious what actually fails in them. If it's just the brushes that need doing, there might be potential for a cheap repair. If the windings are fooked then obviously not.

Its generally a duff solenoid.

so its just a case of taking it to a local refurbushing place rather than buyin new!!

Ive had 2 in 20 months. The last one the AA man frucked good and proper. Kept making me try to start the car via the button so he could locate where the starter was (depsite me telling him over and over it was knackered ), until something stuck in and plumes of smoke started flying up from the back of the engine. Not sure who was bricking themselves the most, me or the AA bloke



Doubt they could recon it, well Austec put a new one on anyway

To get it out you have to remove the intake and the trim cover its then just 2 bolts holding it to the top of the bellhousing. Will tka eabout 2-3Hours depending on your spanner rating
I'd recommend changing or least inspecting the big cable that runs to it as well, changing this on mine fixed my intermittant starter problem.

It's a well known failure - comes off a fork lift truck I do believe...

Forklift as well? I know you can use a nissan maxima one as a replacement but I thought the originals were Tilton super starters?

They were / are Tilton Super Starters, I bought a new one (non tilton) off ebay, that turned the car over slowly & failed after a week.

I've had the Tilton one refurbed (coincidentaly, at A Forklift truck place, cost me £80 though) & that turns over a lot quicker & seems to be lasting.

I managed to source a Nissan Maxima starter motor a few months ago, and it starts first time with no problems.

Mine just makes a whirring noise about 1 in every 6 starts. It's been like that since I bought the car 2 years ago. If it gets a lot worse I'll change it but given the appetite some cars have for starters I decided to stick with what I've got.
