Adsl bt internet cuts off constantly, help !
Discussion
Using a netgear modem with a 2mb line used through an ethernet lan connection, randomly,at no particular moment it cuts of,I have to unplug modem, switch it back on and its fine.
It happens probably 5 - 10 times a night, when it switches off the computer doesnt report anything, just get the ' page cannot be displayed ' page up,happens with both mozilla and ie.
When I use a program like limewire and theres a constant connection,it doesnt switch off.
any ideas ?
cheers

Try a soft reset on the modem. If that works, try a manual disconnect/connect. If that works maybe there is just something causing errors on the line and breaking the ATM connection (or whatever you're using). Are all your phone points correctly terminated and filtered?
Have you checked for firmware upgrades on your modem, and checked the suppliers support center for similar problems?
If it still doesn't seem to work, it might be worth searching a few ADSL forums for tips. I seem to remember that there's a gain setting at the exchange which is something to do with compensating for line resistance for voice calls, and sometimes ADSL works better with this gain removed. Maybe something along these lines might help.

Could be a problem with the BB service from BT as opposed to your wireless setup.
I have BT BB at home (1Mb connection) - but not wireless. For the last 2 or 3 weeks, most evenings the connection drops every 20 mins or so. It's getting really annoying. BT Helpdesk can't seem to work out what the problem is.
Am tempted to move to another BB supplier - anyone with any recommendations? BT is my telephone supplier and I don't want cable.

lots of people are experiencing problems on exchanges that are being upgraded to BT Max 8MB - you get a flaky connection for about the 1st 10 days, with the modem re-training regularly until it decides on what speed its going to run at...Id give it a couple of weeks and see if it settles down...you may even get a free upgrade out of it

My old man had this happen a while back.
Turned out to be a dodgy ADSL filter. He only noticed it when he unplugged the answering machine (plugged into its own socket in their hallway) and suddenly his BB connection became stable.
He had random disconnections, sometimes it would stay on for hours, other times it would cut out after several minutes.
New filter on the answerphone, job done.

I had the same problem, new filter sorted it. As mentioned earlier, try the latest firmware, usually sorts out a few bugs too.
Have you let the router finish "training" itself to work out how fast your connection is? BT say this can take ten days, but it took mine a good couple of weeks. Same symptoms as you, logging into 192.168.1.1 during one of these "no connection" periods would show the router (a BT "voyager" thingie) either handshaking or training.
Solution - leave it alone for a couple of weeks. It's annoying but mine eventually worked out how fast it can push my line and has been rock solid (and fast!) since. By switching it on and off, I suspect you're making the problem worse as the router will forget what it's done before and go back to the beginning.
My 2p, anyway.

Had a similar thing a year or so back.
Rang BT several times each time put off by the 'We've checked the line and all is well, must be your equipment' patter.
Eventually after a month or so of fiddling and changing all my equipment I got more pissed off and demended they come out. It was the line....

There have been a lot of problems on broadband recently caused by BT, irrespective of who your ISP is. Details here.
My 2Meg connection was upgraded to an 8Meg 'Max' connection, but now runs at less than 1Meg!!!!
