Over the past year I've been having splendid fun removing, recharging and replacing my battery. In this period, I've managed to flatten it, ooh, about 20 times, with the result that it is now largely buggered.

Obviously I can't be arsed to sort out whatever malevolent electrical demon is causing a perfectly healthy battery to expire in the space of a week, and have simply installed an Accumate. Job done.

Now that the symptoms are finally cured, I wish to replace my battery. But what with? An 072 does not fit, and neither does an 075 (v. early Chimaera), so I am reduced to trawling dealer catalogues to find a battery with the balls of Fatima in the frame of Kylie.

The best I can do is an Exide W111SE with a CCA (crank rating) of 570 and a 60Ahr capacity. This little bruiser measures in at 228x178x165 and has the added bonus of costing less than £40.

Has anyone with an early Chimaera beaten this? If so, please let me know.

James, what I think you need to find is a tungston 672 but fitting the bugger onto the bracket is the tricky part. Sorry I couldn't help further- no doubt someone else will..

I have a 94 Chimaera and replaced the battery three weeks ago with one which has a CCA of 590. I can't remember what it was but if you can wait until tomorrow I can dig the receipt out and check. It was £52 but top of the range. I had trouble getting it in the casing, mine has a slight bow in the fibreglass, and after trying grease and force I took a hacksaw and stanley knife to the lips on the bottom for it to be held on a 'normal' car. After a quick trip to the local surgery to have my finger stitched back together (the tip is always to cut away from yourself with a stanley knife) it slipped in without any further problems.

95 4.0HC. Battery replaced with a 4 year guarentee one from Halfords. Can't remember the size but it fitted the spec for outputs etc and cost £68. Cheaper than their 3 yr guarentee one!
My battery box is bolted thro the floor, had a bit of fibreglass over the top which had been previously hacked about. The old battery however was the wrong spec completely and let me down.
Don't like promoting Halfords but they wee ok inthis situation.

I fitted a new one to my 95 chim about a year ago, from memory it was a (range rover) 072 ie 72A/hr. From a local motorist shop = £45. It just fits in the battery box, I put a large cable tie around it to enable it to be lifted out.

And as an aside, are those suggested types sealed and/or vented?

Not that I know what that means but I've been told I have the wrong 'sort' of battery and I need a sealed one vented to outside so there is no possibility of it exploding all over a passenger.....

Sounds strange I know. Otherwise, battery performing fine, seems to have enough juice to start even after a while of alarmed non use.

Although I now got myself a battery conditioner since I'm paranoid

Ref MickintheNorth posting, I am in the process of buying a 99V 4.0 and reckon it needs a new battery. Checked with Blackpool and was told 072 but must have a breather to connect to pipe that goes outside of the footwell.
Also getting paranoid and ordering a conditioner. At 6'3" and of 1940's vintage, not too keen on the upside-down position in the footwell
